Does anybody have info on a 53 allstate? There's one for sale in the greensheet I was going to look at. From what I understand they are rebadged henry j's.
Allstates were built by henry j and badged as allstate for sears. They even went so far as to cast an allstate head. I have only seen two. Pooch
The Allstate offered both a 4 and 6 cyl engine in two trim packages Standard and Deluxe. The 4cyl used the Kaiser-Frazer L-head engine obtained from Willys-Knight, and was reported to get 35mpg. production figures for the 4cyl in 1952 was 900 and 425 in '53 aprox. The six had 666 units produced in 52 with only 372 in 53. The Allstate was produced by Kaiser-Frazer and sold thru the Sears catalog, but confined to the southeast in actual promotion. It was styled by alex Termulis and featured a more distinctive front end than the Henry J the car used many Sears produced components such as tires, battery, spark plugs. Lack of public response caused Sears to drop the car in early '53. Price new was from $1594-1785. wheelbase 100.0 inches lenght 176.6 weight 2325-2455 lbs Hard to find the Allstate body parts such as the grille, hood ornaments, badges. Johnny Angel
A great site to see Allstates and Henry Js is www.henryjcars.com Look in the Under Construction heading while you are there and click on Hairy Cherry project. That is mine.
Was there 1 more version of this car? I know about the Allstate/HenryJ, but what was the 3rd version of the same car? Was there a 3rd version?
To my knowlege there is only the Henry J and Allstate. There are two dfferent body styles though. Trunkless and with trunk. Also two different tailights. 1951 had two round tailights above the bumper and '52 -'54 in the corners of the fender fins similar to '49 Caddy.
Years ago in a Popular Mechanics an article stated that the Allstate was available from Sears in kit form - don't know if they ever shipped any in boxes, but this would be the Holy Grail of Kaiser-produced autos.
