S10 5 speed install question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by choprods, Jul 11, 2006.

  1. I am gonna install an early 5 speed from an S10 in my '58 El Camino replacing the 3 speed that consumed its internals lately.

I noticed a couple of things that seem to hinder the install, maybe you guys can shed some light on my concerns.....

The input shaft cover seems longer and of course the splines for the clutch are fine instead of the 10 spline I am currently running.

I am running an older early 60's flywheel 11" clutch and cast iron truck bell housing.....what year clutch plate should I have to run to mate the trans and this flywheel?

will my pressure plate work with the "new" clutch plate?
will I need a special throw out bearing or arm? I could use some help and info here- Thanks in advance!

Of course I swapped my s10 tanny to a different animal(mopar)....but I ran into the same problem with the input shaft cover(collar?)....I just cut it back abut a inch to fit.
I believe as well there were different spline counts on different 5 speeds....
I can't be sure about this.....I recall Pat Mcguire mentioning this to me.....

I put one behind an early SBC, and I ran a 4.3 V6 S-10 disk, with the 60's style pressure plate and flywheel.

I didn't run into any problems with the input shaft cover.

I'm dropping one behind the 250-6 that came from you guys and I made a 1/2" spacer to fit between the ****** and bellshousing.

You hafta cut the input shaft off and grind a little of the shoulder down where the throwout bearing collar will slide easily.

i put mine behind a 235, so i had to cut a little more, but i just made it all the same as the 3 speed, the splines went deeper into the flywheel, but fit ok. I used a 10" clutch, you will want a astro disc, retain the original pp and throwout, they should fit. the throwout bearing collar fit perfect on mine, I used a generic chevy v8 bearing

I thought S10 shafts (and V6 Camaro/Firebird) were 14 spline. The fine splines (26 spline) as far as I know were on V8 T5's. If yours is 26 and you want an 11" x 1 1/8" disc, I can get you a Borg Warner part #. If it's a 14 and you're trying to stay close to 11", it'd probably be easiest to go down to the FLAPS and check the book. When I swapped my SM420 for a WC T5, I had a hard time finding an application for an 11" fine spline with 1 1/8. I went down to Autozone and they had a book that listed dimensions and their application. If memory serves, I think some Corvette years had 11" 14 spline.
As far as fitment, trim to match old ******. Both the input shaft and bearing retainer. Your PP and release should work.
Oh and by the way, the Astro Van disc is from around '85-'89 with the V6. Pretty sure those are 11 X 1 X 14.

The Astro Clutch disc is NAPA (Canada)CP4212 Part No. Chevrolet part number 15551426. 1987 Astro Van with a 4.3 liter V6. 11 inch diameter x 14 spline .

    VIVA la HAMB!

This place is amazing! The clutch disc is the only thing holding me up and here is all the info I need.

    Thanks guys!

Oh, and I found it in the first search too!

The astro van clutch disc would not work with my stock 57 chevy stuff..too large of diameter...so I just went with a stock S10 disc. If it goes to **** I guess I will just have a new disc made the correct size with the right hub!

Well, I have the larger flywheel that takes the 11" clutch. Since the right size seems to be available, I'm gonna try to get that. The way I drive, I doubt the little one would last very long.

Speaking of which; now that I know about the torque handling abilities, or rather lack of, I'm going to be actively seeking out a newer 10 spline T5 or maybe a T56. This 14 spline T5 is now just another hold-me-over like the Saginaw was to start with.

Again, thanks to the HAMB for all the help.

    Ernie,

Your posts on this have been the most help so far, especially the link in your sig. I actually found that in my first search on the T5 issue

    Thanks!

    Vance,

If you're running a flathead, that 11" clutch is big time overkill. It's also heavy as all get-out, which means a slower revving engine. The flip side is the flywheel effect is better, so if you've got a heavier car, it'll help the slow speed movement...
