i know it's been done a lot,i have the column and box.I was wondering if anyone knew from first hand experience if the column needs to be shortened and if so how to go about shortenening it.My frame is in one place and my body at another or i would check it myself,thanks..............

  3. I just read a how to in a current Mag but not sure what one. I'll look and get back to you. Generally it's cut to fit once body is mounted and seat in the car.

I whacked about two inches off mine.

I also used the F1 column drop, and stretched it about an inch.

  5. Any reason you can't cut it by the box and stick a rag joint connector on it and use any old column you want with it?

If you are using on a Model "A" you really do not need to cut or shorten the length if you are hanging it from the orig. gas tank column support. You will need to trim the ears of the flange to mount through the frame. If you chop the top or channel the body over the frame you will nee to shorten it which is very simple. Good luck and if you need a temp. to trim the flange just send me a PM with your snail mail and I'll send one out to you right away. Dave

  7. The Current issue (Sept 06) of American Rodder has a 6 page photo layout of the swap. They are using a 53-56 Box but the job is the same for both.

Might be talking bollox, but without the leverage of the column to brace the box, it may flex the ch***is rail? If it flexes a lot it could eventually stress the rail - most A ch***is seem to already have enough cracks to be going on with!

Other than that I don't see a problem, as it would just need a support at the base of the column - I guess the ch***is could be plated around the area to reinforce it if flexing is an issue.

i'll be loppin' mine off tonight, i'll take pics. I'm gonna use MP33's approach. I'm gonna cut it to length, then tack weld a quick release hub from speedway onto the shaft, drill a hole through the hub and shaft and press in a hardened roll pin. That way, i can remove my steering wheel at car shows and where it as a belt buckle.

rust belt, post pics please! Also, will the later F1 pitman arm work with the earlier F1 style box?
