Probably a dum question however as opposed to the t 5 manual with overdrive do chevette manual 4 spds fit into the equation at all for a little homebuilt roadster?. Would they bolt up to a 60 chevy truck bellhousing? Thank you 4 reading
I have a T4, it came in Monzas and such. Nice small tranny. Is this what you are asking about? Has standard Chevy botl pattern. I would not put it behind anything with real power but I know a few that were hammered pretty hard by classmates back then. Basically a T5 minus the OD.
The Chevette transmission was designed to handle 50/60 HP , I honestly believe it would be short lived behind anything with a lot more power. HRP
Post a picture of the transmission you're thinking of using. If it's from a Chevette, it ain't gonna bolt up to any normal Chevy bellhousing, that would fit a 60 Chevy six or V8 engine...is my (slightly educated) guess.
Jim, from what I have read between phone calls here today they used several different transmissions in these things!
I talked to farmer friend who has a 2000 s10 with a 5speed. Of course it has the electronic speedo. I know they can be converted to manual. So that is a pretty gd candidate for my project. He just happened to mention that he had a couple of chevette 4 spds. I got a little curious hence my question. I'm pretty sure the t5 will be my pick. Tom Langdon highly recommended the t5 as well. I was just curious. I couldn't really even picture a chevette in my mind. Hell I'm 72. That one just slipped through the cracks lol. Thank you, Clyde
Chevettes are best not pictured in your mind. Google will show you pictures, if you must know. Pretty unremarkable car.
Hot rod magazine put a 500 Caddy in one . It was pretty remarkable. I knew a guy from Idaho had one with a 455 Olds that ran Super Gas for years. Even won some NHRA division race's.
Around here, the Chevettes rusted away almost as bad as the Vegas did. You couldn't fine either one more then 3 or 4 years old. The drive trains were about as cheap as Chevy could have made them, most were lucky to hold up as well as the bodies did. Gene
They were quite awesome in Europe in the 70's They made a "HS2300" that was fitted with a 2300cc 16v lotus engine, that loved to be driven sideways
I could be wrong, and I’m sure someone will chime in , but I don’t think the 2000 s10 trans is what you need. I believe it’s bellhousing is part of the case itself. That is, it doesn’t unbolt. You need the earlier style s10 or similar t5. Again, I could be wrong, as that happens quite often. Lol Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
best bet is to go look at transmissions, and take pictures, and post the pictures here so we can see what they really are. Before you buy.
Since you are talking to Tom and saying 60 truck bellhousing that tells me that you are looking at putting something behind a 235 or 261. That has to be a trans with a 4 bolt Chevy bolt pattern that bolts to a 51 or later Chevy truck or 55 or later Chevy car bellhousing. I'm pretty sure that the 2000 S 10 5 speed had the bellhousing as part of the transmission case though. That won't even begin to work with a 235 or 261.
