We are headed from southern Ohio to Gatlinburg, TN. We'll be going through Knoxville. Is there anything hot rod related we can check out? Actually, we're staying in Sevierville.... Seems like the muscle car museum was pretty expensive to only get muscle cars....are there other styles there too; traditional anything?
I don't know when you're going, or what you are doing..... But I got to tell you, when you get near Gatlinburg, keep your eyes peeled. You will see a car in just about everyone's yard. Seems like that area is overflowing with old cars. My theory is that all the locals see all the rod runs and car shows and just HAVE to have a project for themselves. Gatlinburg has many many many cool car shows during the summer. I would venture to say that no matter when you are going there, you will encounter a car show. The Grand Rod Runs are some of the largest. Those are held in the spring and the fall though. If you are in town for one of those, you cannot miss it. Its like Sturgis, only with hot rods and muscle cars.
Probably not in your time frame, and pretty much a NSRA style event, but... Shades of the Past Hot Rod Roundup #24 - Sept 8th & 9th, 2006 Pigeon Forge
The Muscle Car place is pretty cool ... IF you ever had a Muscle Car ... Lots of near stuff ... the museum changes around ... some engine stuff and all stays the same. NOT ALL Chevy ... but over half are and not much HAMBer type stuff ... a friend of mine helps out there and I usually go every year when the Shades of the Past event is in town. Calhouns is a GOOD place to get a steak ... both in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Lokars is in Knoxville ... and easy to find. Kind of a street rod place Great area ... The Great Smokey Mountains ... I would like to move there ...
Kind of ironic you replied. I just looked up that old PM from you regarding that guy that deals in 33/4 stuf....looks like he is about an hour and a half away.....i wrote his # down.... yes, i love that place!!! beautiful...simply beautiful.... when i was there about 2 years ago, i vowed i wouldn't return unless i had a roadster hot rod to drive through cade's cove and take a picnic lunch.....i didn't make it...i'm about 3 weeks away from being able to do that!
I love driving there in my 32 Roadster. My wife and I go thru Maggie Valley, see some friends in Cherokee ( a native american with a 32 Ford ) and over the mountain to Gatlinburg. Last fall ... HOTRODPRIMER and Mrs. HRP were traveling with us in their 32 roadster and we saw a ELK ... in the park. Beautiful country ... Wishing you a great time ...
There's two funky little car places in Gatlinburg, TN -- one is the Hollywood Star Cars Museum and the other is the Dukes Of Hazzard one. I missed the Dukes one, but went thru the Hollywood one -- interesting and cool stuff in there. Hollywood Stars link: http://www.starcarstn.com/
You need to drive on through Gatlinburg and go down the mountain to Cherokee. About 45 mins. Fantastically beautiful drive. Then go east to Maggie Valley and see the motorcycle museum called Wheels thru Time. Cycles and Cars and if the owner is there, he will tell tales of how he collected this stuff and it is something. All the cycles there are in running condition except about 3. Also make sure you take the motor drive through the woods just east of downtown in Gatlinburg. One way narrow road but beautiful. Take your camera. Watch out for bears.
Every time I've gone, there was some type of show in Pigeon Forge (just up the street). It's a great place to vacation.
floyd garrett has a muscal car museum in sevierville and don't forget about dollyworld in pigeon forge
We was there a couple of years back & i have to say the muscle car museum was well worth the visit, i'm not sure if its still there but they had the coolest 40 coupe......ex moonshine runner with 90% orig paint & low miles. That area is one of the nicest place's i've ever been too in my life! Kev.
Ratster is having a party at his house on Saturday night. He's in Maryville though.... But on Saturday, it will be THE place to be in east TN.
The 'Dukes of Hazzard' place in G'burg is "Cooter's garage" I've never been though. If you like Mexican try "No way Jose's" in Gatlinburg. The wife insists we eat there every time we go up.
Anyone who loves American muscle should love Floyd's place. Some of the cars are so rare, that the uninformed might p*** them by as just nice cars but he has some BIG $$, super rare stuff there. Last time I was in (few months ago) he had an original, unrestored Z-06 Corvette & T-bolt. That '40 coupe is still there also. Gotta be one of the nicest survivors in the country. It alone is worth the $8 admission. If he's not covered up he'll guide a tour for you as well. Floyd has the Don Lowe-built '40 Merc drop top (the orange one with white top) that made TRJ a year or two back. It'a stunner. Paul Ellis Ford Parts is just up Chapman Hwy. in Seymour. He carries early Ford stuff & always has some early Ford cars in stock. It's worth the 20 minute drive from Sevierville. I'd say stop by here & say hello but I'm leaving town for the weekend on Friday. JH
Is this "Floyd's Place" and "The Muscle Car Museum" the same place....doesn't sound like it but you guys described the same 40 coupe?? ...hate that I'll miss you Harrison....BTW, what is your EXACT address....I could bring my truck.......when, exactly, did you say your leaving....would it be hard to hot wire your....well, never mind! ****, you'll probably be up here cleaning me out, while I'm gone....hahahaha Cool! I would like for my wife's uncle and I to spend a day (at least) looking at cars and maybe chasing a lead or two I hate when out-of-staters come and take our tin....now it's my turn! I's gotta snout like a blood hound! Look out TN, here I come! ****, what if a fella is out of cash.......can't get much on my looks either!
We book a trip to Gatlinburg every year. This year, unfortuately, we won't be able to go til round Christmas... and the Mrs. is having fits because one of the only reasons we go is to go to Cades Cove, and she's afraid if theres snow the roads will be closed and we won't be able to go there. That said, unless you're really, really a Dukes fan, there isn't too much to Cooters Place. I haven't been to the muscle car museum since I was a teenager, but it was pretty cool then. And even Ripleys or one of the other museums on the strip had some old tin in front of it last time we were there. And as far as out of staters taking old tin... last time I was there we were looking for a "ahem" still... didn't see one of them though... One last word, if you've never been there. Pigeon Forge is definately the more "touristy" type place, while Gatinburg is more mellow. And, Calhoun's is a good steak place, as is Texas Roadhouse. Jay
the only hot rods that i saw was the ambulance taking me to the hospital after i fell off the alpine slide stopped in hillbilly golf on the way so we could switch to an ambulance that had BRAKES tom
I'm gonna add my stamp on to Dale Walksler's motorcycle museum over in Maggie Valley(Wheels Thru Time) You guys will enjoy that and probably spend more time there than at Floyd Garrett's(the musclecar museum) Dale's just a hell of a nice guy, and it's nothing to see him walk over to about any bike in there(and most are unrestored, like 'barn fresh') hop on, and ride around thru the building, out the door and back in again. He'll tell you about anything in there if you ask! Do 'em both if you have the time/money If you want to look at overpriced tin, head east out 411 from Sevierville about 8-10 miles to Chip's antiques. He's got a rust collection to go with his gas station stuff, and the store is fulla **** too. It's on the left about a mile after the road goes narrow. The Hollywood star's cars place in the Forge might not sound like much, but there's some notable things there--one of the "Goldfinger/James Bond" Aston Martins, Al Capone's armor-plated Caddy(Lincoln?? I forget), Buford Pusser's Toronado....well, that stuff was there a few years ago anyway. Kinda cheesy, but if ya got time to kill......
