Hot Rods Have you ever scraped the pavement with your hot rod??

I was just reading a for sale ad on here and it showed a really low to ground hot rod...it got me to thinking....

Have any of you guys ever s****ed the bottom side of your hot rod??

Did it damage anything when you did hit bottom??

I know some car cultures really enjoy s****ing the pavement and seeing all the sparks...

From my racing days...sparks never were a welcome thing...it usually meant you were pulling in the pits really soon...

**have bottomed out so hard going down the highway that actually found chunks of asphalt on top of battery mounted under the hood of my Fairlane - **wife's '50 Chevy PU won "The Road Kill Express" award, and then proceeded to drag bottom of suspension on way out of parking lot - no structure damage to either - neither experiences recommended - ** a friend with a '54 Chevy/small block, came so close to the pavement with oil pan on a trip from Calif to Laughlin, NV on the rolling hilly highway spun the oil pan plug off twice

 

I have s****ped a fender apron but not the frame. HRP

 

If you don't drag at least on the speed bumps, you ain't low enough.

 

dragged plenty of exhausts.. my 62 Merc was the worst..

 

My old Merc was pretty low, but I built it to be low and not drag anything but the frame. You kind of learn how to drive a lowered car and don't let a little frame drag freak you out.

I've got skid plates on the PB booster and the oil pans and they do have marks on them.

Like partssaloon I put skid plates on the MC and anything else that sits below the frame and yes I have dragged and sent sparks but I am particularly careful on speed bumps.

 

I had a Milodon 9 quart pan on my '34 for a while. The roads are so bad here in Calif. now that I had to take it off. Where I live there are actually ruts in the road like in the old days when they had covered wagon. I took the car out one Sunday and stopped at my local gas station. When I got out of the car in noticed a small trail of oil following the path of my car. While filling it up it occoured to me that it might be me .
Sure enough it was. The pan was replaced with a 6 qt pan and the roads are even worse here now.

This is as low as I go...I actually could work on the muffler system without a jack....I miss the ole guy..

 

Bottom of my bumper guards could tell more than a few stories.

I make sure the important stuff is tucked out of the way, Then all ya damage is sheet metal.
I had a truck right after high school that I got stuck on the edge of a newly paved road.

 

Yes, not that long ago. And it was NO fun at all. And quite expensive by the time it was all said and done. But I learned an important lesson!

Yep, on my 36 3W, I've wrecked 2 prestine grills. Also, destroyed the oil plug and lost my oil out of one of these stupid aluminum finned pans that has the plug on the bottom...

I've learned that 2 inches from the bottom of grill on a 36 to the road is not enough !

No, but one of the local kids lowered a brand new Volkswagen so low that he tore the oil pan off the car, along with other damage, when he hit a raised manhole. He claimed the insurance company totaled the car.

I've never s****ed the pavement in Clarence, but one day I approached a box turtle (some folks call them terrapins) on a smooth level stretch of highway. As is most folks' custom I just straddled it. The front crossmember didn't clear him though. After that I raised the front a bit.

 

Yes, the bumper guards a couple of times, never the frame though

 

I like low but drivable cars, they drag once in a while but not all the time

But stockish cars...I've s****ed some of them. Most recently, an Edsel, a Corvair, and a Hudson.

 

On both the lower lower 4-bar mounts on my truck's front end, I mounted wheelie bar wheels (inside the brackets) using XL bolts. They have grind marks all over them. They just happen to be in the right position to also protect my extra deep ****** pan, which has never been s****ed. Otherwise, no other hits on the ch***is. On my next build, nothing but suspension parts will be lower than the bottom of frame rails.

 

Yep ...On a homemade speedbump in a friends driveway..crashed the panel below the frame , below the front four link rear pivots...fab'd a new panel & respray...silver metallic is a real pisser to match
