Trying to figure out the most cost effective way of turning the volume down on the car a bit Right now it's just open headers. I'm looking at a couple of different things and I'm not sure what the most effective option is. Got these Auger style inserts, that I'm leaning towards https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Auger-Style-Muffler-Pair-3-1-2-Inch-O-D-,382830.html Or whatever you wanna call these https://www.amazon.com/SCHOENFELD-D...hoenfeld+Insert+Muffler&qid=1594077048&sr=8-2 and possibly add a kick out Is there any other cheap options that don't change the look too drastically that I haven't stumbled upon yet? Thanks Edit- Just found this style also https://www.amazon.com/Spec-D-Tunin...f=psdc_15726991_t2_B00CP8K6OK#customerReviews
Cheap options? I stuffed a couple of Harley mufflers in my pipes. Go to any Harley shop, they will have a bin of 500 take offs, pay you to take 'em. Mine got so quiet I had to ram a rod down and break the center disc out. Just right..
If your handy at all, making your own is the way to go,you even get to try other designs for only your time. Tip,long pipes don't make as much sound. Short do.
What size are your pipes? the second pic is a pretty standard motorcycle baffle. You can get them in different lengths and they do help kick outs will help also where are your headers dumping ? pushing them behind the passenger compartment does wonders.
If you don't care about HP loss, the spiral type are quieter. We tried some on a flow bench for our race-car [we needed 690 cfm x 2 for our engine] Our pipes were 5" diameter side pipes [for a Corvette] The spiral type were just over 540 cfm. Eventually we made V shaped baffles to create 2 x wave type flow [and cancel each other out] We got down to 95db [FIA limit] Make some bolt on extensions for your Headers and use "supertrapp" mufflers [the noise can be tuned] This is common on Sprintcars
The Speedway augers are loud, but not quite open header loud. Me and Dad built side pipes using 2 1/2" header mufflers (glasspack) and collector extentions. Much quieter, but still loud and aggressive sounding.
Just my opinion, but those supertrapp style sound like crap. The baffle type probably what I would use. You might need to make the holes deeper to the center of tube to get more sound reduction. Sent from dumb operator on a smart phone
I was told that running a crossover pipe between the two sides will really help... have not tried it...
Any thoughts on this kind? possibly with holes drilled in the pipe and surrounded with fiberglass. I was thinking with the auger style I can pack some fiberglass in-between the sections, that would surely do something right? dunno what kind of back pressure that would cause though. Anyone ever try either? Edit - just gonna grab the ones in the pic here and experiment with them, what could go wrong for 30 bucks?
I'd spend the $30 on some pipes to get the outlet a lot further back on the car. I'd also put some mufflers on it. But maybe I'm getting old.
I'm with squirrel. I'm getting old too. I think maybe I should be protecting what hearing I have left. You think about these things as you get old, asking people to repeat things all the time is tiring. Gene
I put an auger in front of the 70 series Flow Master on my 5.0 pickup and it really helped the drone.
I am old and I'd be figuring out a plug for the headers and run pipes in and under the car and back past the rear axle with your choice of mufflers. Don't Laugh as my 23 T was the grand daddy of all suspect T buckets. Had a buddy who did custom van interiors using a lot of shag carpet who had the hottest looking wife in Texas in 1974 who gave me some left over carpet. Anyhoo with the 5.00 Dallas swap meet (in the bank parking lot) "obsolete" megaphone headers and a couple of muffler shop bends I stuck a pair of Purple Hornie mufflers on it. Looks like crap now but it really sounded good then. Maybe a pair of glass pack blanks the right diameter and some turn outs would make a sweet sounding setup and not look anywhere near as bad as mine did. Thinking back, for what I paid for those, the paint to paint them and the bends I could have had a muffler shop put real exhaust on it then.
Ran these Sandersons for 12 years with down-pipes to Thrushes. In all those years I only un-capped the headers twice...made it sound like a demo-derby car...hated it.
I'm running the auger style baffles in the lakes headers of my A, and they worked excellent for me, the volume dropped just about 10db (measured with a decibel meter), which is just about perfect, quiet enough to not cause problems with the neighbors or draw unwanted attention under acceleration (and no ear damage for the occupants), but loud enough to satisfy the desire to hear the engine. No discernible loss of performance at all, & the sound is great.
baffles with ceramic muffler packing worked great on my tapered "lake" headers. Similar to this, but with ceramic packing around the entire length of the tube with holes. I first tried it with no packing, and it sounded... funny. Hard to describe, but sounds great with the packing. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Spee...-Collector-Muffler-Inserts-4-Inch,268466.html
It dropped it from ~110db measured about 1' from the opening of the turnout, down to about 100db, at idle. Inside the cab it dropped from around 95db to about 85db, at idle. Under acceleration it's louder, but that's where the biggest drop in volume occurs, but I didn't attempt to measure that. I used to come back from a 45 minute drive with my ears ringing, no more.
I had Auger inserts on my Street rod Morris minor it had fenderwell headers with 3 inch pipe turning out in front of the rear tire. It had a 5.0 Ford and sounded just like a small block Cobra with side pipes. you could carry on a conversation with the windows down at 65 mph on the highway.
I have a 2 1/2 inch set that are brand new . I will sell them cheap. They are already inexpensive from Speedway. They have been on my shelf for over 3 years
Well I'm not a complete fool, I have worn a earplug at least in my left ear the few times ive been out. Ill let ya know how these silencers work out. Have a feeling ill end up modifying the crap out of them if they don't work too well from the get go.
Mike I've ran these on a couple of my Model A's, bit pricey, but they work great. You'd probably have to do a little modification to bring them up closer to the body, like a pie cut, but you could paint them or wrap them. The mufflers are effective, they extend the outlet towards the rear of the car, and they have the turnout.
