Just a thought but i was reading about y blocks and one thing stood out and that was that sometimes the intake doesn't fit exactly with the heads and leaks with it appearing as the water pump going bad. Anyway just something to think about, especially if it still happening after the new pump goes on.

1954 had two different pumps because the engines were made in different plants too.

  9. I'm not quite sure what you're asking.

If you have a car or truck that has/had a Y block in it originally, your best bet is to look at one of the parts store websites and look up the application. Most of the pumps are pictured online.

If you are putting a 272/292/312 Y block in a car that never had one, say, a '32 or something; then you'll want to use a later car pump like a Cardone 58200 (application is a '62 Galaxie with a 292). The 58235 later truck pump is similar but has a longer inlet.

The truck pumps have some details to watch for over the years, and this makes it interesting if you have original pulleys and are trying to make things fit. Some of the truck pumps have 3/4" shafts, while others have 5/8" shafts; and some of the 3/4" shafts have longer pilots than others...so some fans won't fit (Cardone 58234). Lastly, earlier truck pumps through '56 have "high mount" fans- the fan actually mounts on a remote bearing which bolts onto a bracket cast into the top of the water pump. This "high mount" pump is Cardone 58233...which is actually a "send in and have rebuilt" service on your core.

Go here to get a look at some of these pumps: http://www.cardone.com/English/Club/Products/webcat/sbyprd.asp
