On my sbc 350 I found top dead center on the compression stroke. However, the distributor rotor is pointing at cylinder 5. My plan is to pull the distributor out, turn the oil pump fitting to line it and the rotor with cylinder 1. Does that sound ok or is there a better way? Sorry for the basic questions but I'm doing this for the first time. Thanks Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
How about some feedback for the people who help you in all these question threads. It goes a long way.
Deal. Sorry I guess that is rather selfish. Consider it done. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
OR you could unplug the wires at the cap and start with #1 in the hole where the distributor is pointing. MAKING SURE you follow the correct firing order and CORRECT direction the rotor turns.
you should take off valve cover and make sure you are on number 1 for sure and not 180 out.little late but the only sure way then do as you stated with oil pump tang. if you want it to run do not just move wires to suit piss poor advice there is the right way and then
yep....put a rag in the number one hole and turn it over until it pops out....or like you said - you know your at TDC - that's where - ON THE CAP - the number one plug wire should be....and place the other plug wires per the firing order.......!
You don't need to turn the oil pump tang to line up with the distributor drive, just get the rotor pointing to number 1 (where you want it), slide the distributor into position, to mesh with the cam gear, hold slight pressure down on the rotor and crank the starter a few times.. The distributor will fall in to mesh with the oil pump drive, refit the cap, sort out the leads (firing order) set the timing, lock down the distributor now you're good to go..
post count does not equate intelligence.try what you suggest on your own.big difference between number 1 and number 5.I hear your windups calling=no rotor
Dude if you were a mechanic you would know the answer to the question is NO IT DOESN'T. You can start the firing order ANY POSITION YOU WANT as long as the tip of the rotor is pointing at the position that you want to use for number one at TDC. And you place the wires in the correct firing order with the correct direction of rotor turning.
Ummm...I think what loudbang is saying is if in fact it’s on top dead center on compression then it does not matter where the rotor is pointing if the plug wires are installed accordingly, I always point the rotor at number one cylinder but it’ll run anywhere if the plug wires are correct for the rotor position Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Lol. What @loudbang is saying is 100% correct the car will run just fine. good practice is to have the distributor and wiring the way it left the factory to help not have problems going forward , ie: if you forget you did that to the distributor at some point. it works and won’t harm a thing . what you are thinking will work, if you are out 180* you will just have to set it up again is all.
after you try it let us know how it did not work.being 180 out is beyond their (your) comprehension.but carry on that click was the lights being extinguished.
Multiple people telling you your wrong, but you still want to argue? Well, not really argue, insult. Not cool.
Guessing reading comprehension is another one of your problems. READ what I said to answer your mythical question "as long as the tip of the rotor is pointing at the position that you want to use for number one at TDC." TDC is NOT 180 out that simple.
