There was a recent posting about a great car plaque website and I found this plaque but don't know the club. I live in Lewisburg, PA but there are other Lewisburgs in the US. Does anyone have a history or know anything about this club? Other than they weren't spelling be winners? Thanks.
Now with your spare time you can do some research. A few years ago I found a Tarantulas Car Club plaque from here in Anderson, S.C. and I ask everyone I knew about the plaque, no one I talked to had ever heard of the club. About a year go I had a gentleman get in touch with my wife on facebook and was asking her were we found the plaque and that in the late 50's he was a member of the club that was started at old boy's high school and only lasted a few years. Ironically when he was telling me the names of some of the members and name came up that I knew that had a automotive repair shop less than a block from where our business was but never ***ociated him with a car club. After talking to him I discovered these guy try to get together once a year to renew their high school friendship, I was able to get in touch with Dennis O'Brien and he had that plaque and I had him make 6 new plaques for the surviving members. Now I have found another local plaque that seemingly no one knows anything about so now I am on a quest to chasing down leads on another past club. Oddly enough it too is a Road Angels club, less the extra "E". HRP
Cool stuff. A friend of mine had club plaques that he found at swap meets and other places over the years in his converted bus down the top edge of both sides. Some of you probably bought tail light lenses or other small trinkets from him at Turlock or other Cali/ Arizona swap meets in the winter months. I've got an original plaque from the local club that faded away for a number of years and was brought back by local folks including some decedents of original members. One of the original members gave me his old plaque when I was working for him.
My plaque from the club my friend and I started wasn't on that post the other day. I will have to see about that.
NO, but true story. A friend had a big old Mercury, he called it the "road angel". He went to a big car show in KC, bought a nice jacket and had them put Road Angel on the back of it. Paid a good amount. He loved it, and put it on right away. His wife looked at it as they left the show that night. it proudly says "Road Angle". He was embarr***ed so he kept it. We had a good laugh anyway.
Well ,Road an Flags kind of tie together in away . One of my 3 car clubs I was in back in early 1960s in high school,I still run on the rear axle of my old hot rod. But most of the great guys I new in the club are gone RIP, and have not found any others. There is hope some one may see the back of my car at a shows,an say "Hay I was in that club !". I have had 2 other lost buddy's from high school that were in other clubs say "Hi" at shows,as they knew my hot rod. One happened on the very last show I went too,March 8th 2020 just before China 19 closed down all our shows Miami/Dade Co..
There is still an active club in PA called the Road Angels, they are in the Doylestown area. Wonder why that plaque is misspelled? Maybe a club had them made, then they them out when they realized they were wrong? Also there was a NJ Road Angels in the 50s or 60s, I used to work with a guy who still had his dads old club jacket and plaque. But theirs were blue I think.
You could draw up your own design, send it off and order as few as 5 plaques made. I know a kid (guy) who did it in art cl*** in 1957. Had his own club with 3 members. 50 years later he restarted the club. Same plaque design with less than 10 members now. A collector stopped him at a show and bought a plaque for his collection.
In the '50s there was literally thousands of clubs started that then quickly faded away. I've got one from my town that to date I've been unable to find anyone who had heard of it.
I met a few of the "Cabriolets" when I was also putting my own car into the shows,in early 1960s ,when they came as a club to indoor car shows, pretty close net club, would at some shows, put up a "Cabriolets" club display, clubs best 2 ,up to 4 cars at Dinner Key/Coconut Grove an at Bayfront Park Autotorem. Like the "Lighting Rods" an "Road Rebels" did. Sorry was not good with names if not more then just talk 1 or 2 times. I did airbrush Wild Car T-shirts at the shows ,under my art name"The Bat",likely did a shirt or two for guys in the club.
Thanx. They were before my time. I moved to South Florida in late '72. I was fortunate to attend a reunion they had at the Darrell Gwynn Foundation and speed shop in Davie in 2011. I didn't know anybody but gave a ride to somebody who did. Got to hear lots of stories and see lots of s****books. It was a memorable evening.
Road Angels was a popular name for car clubs all over the United States, Dennis has a total of 167 Road Angels plaques listed. HRP https://www.obrientruckers.com/ppwd...+angels&city=&state_code=&logo=&****on=Search
There were a few screw ups and there are several examples on this page on my website ... https://carclubplaques.pairsite.com/OtherStuff/05-Mistakes.htm You have to remember that a lot of those car club guys in the 50's were still in high school and failing their English cl***es.
