Will a 1960 283 v8 fit onto my 1950 chevy stock manual 3 speed? Also will the 6 cyl fly wheel fit on the 283? The engine is a stock 216 and I have a stock 283. I know about putting a small block into the 50 chevy, but I was just wondering if anyone has any experience putting one to the stock 3 speed. I know that a 60 impala came with a manual 3 speed.
There was a adapter made ... to do this and keep everything stock but the engine. They pop up on eBay every now and then ...
You can run a 283 with your stock rear end if you find a three speed from a '48-'54 Chevy truck; it's got the same bolt pattern as a stock SBC bell housing. The 216 flywheel won't work. You must find one from a small block, but they're dropping out of trees.
I have a 1952 1/2 ton that had a 216 in it when i bought it. I was told that the previous owner had a 283 in it at one time. It seemed pretty hack to me, maybe he could've done it better but the steering column had to be moved outward and the firewall was cut. I'm not saying thats the only way about it im just saying thats how it was done, keep that into consideration. Hope that helps. Brendan
Which clutch and pressure plate? Out of which small block set up. In an s10 trans swap, do you use the s10 clutch and pressure plate with a small block flywheel? Which combination. Also would you need to adapt the s10 trans cross member or will the stock one work with fabrication.
I remember seeing this swap made in R & C a hundred eyars ago...there is one transmission that fit and one that did not...and in a previous post I see it was a truck trans...also the moveing of the steering gear seems familiar. If it were me, if you're interested in a later V8 for power, I'd leave the old stuff alone and make the move to a more modern setup, use the T5 trans, swap in a Ford 9" and a Mustang II front suspension to get better brakes as well. I found it's easier to use parts that you can get in any auto parts store (like NAPA) if you plan on driving it as a daily driver.
If you go with the stock-type transmission (torque-tube) you are going to have major firewall clearance problems with a V-8 if this is a car installation I don't know if you run into the same problems in a pick-up
I had a '54 1/2 ton with a 283 and the firewall had a big curved recess welded into to the firewall for distributor clearance. The bell was a stock v/8 truck item and it bolted to the crossmember.
I can find a t5 from a mid 80's s10. Is this the correct era? Also if anyone could shed some light on the specifics on the swap. Crossmember, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel? I tried the search but couldnt find too many specifics. thanks
I forgot to say, when I bought my truck the firewall had been beaten inward at least a half an inch with a ball pin hammer. No one in thier right mind would do that to a straight body now, at least i hope not. You can take all of these mods into consideration and make them work flawlessly. Good luck. Brendan
