I need some input - good, bad, or ugly! I've got a 455 olds that is going into my latest project, a '37 chevy pickup. It's not the most traditional engine, but I had it left over from a previous build. The main problem I have with the engine is the lack of cool intake manifolds they make for it, so I decided to build my own. It is close to being finished, but I'm not sure if I like the look of it. Maybe once it is installed and I get some air scoops my view will change, but right now I'm not sure if I even want to finish it. Let me know what you think. -Drew
I really like it, I think it looks really cool. Forgive me for giving you more projects but if you can build something like that I think that you would be able to make your own valve covers too. Since its an Olds it would look cool if you could make something that looks like the old Rocket Olds ones. Then run the spark plug wires over the top of em'. Well you asked for feedback. You're on the right track, looks really cool. Brendan
Custom valve covers are already on the list. The stock and aftermarket ones are just plain ugly. I've got an extra set of "olds rocket" valve covers from the 303 build in my '52 rocket that I might cut up and see what I can make.
That is******'n Man.That what this hobby is about, I hope it works good those engines have alotta toque right out of the Box. Keep us up to speed on how it progresses.
i like it, though something around the top part is throwing me off, probaly the round tubing, i would narrow it around the down tubes if i could, try and keep most of it square or angled out from the down tubes if you gotta keep the carb spacing, looks like you are still workin out some stuff there from what i can tell, should look good either way, looks like you got some fine craftsmanship in it. dont know, i never did a intake so you already got one up on me, just throwin ideas into the hat.
It would be cool if you could make the top plate removable so that you can fit all sorts of setups on it.
Are you making it a common plenum all the way around the top? That's an easy way to minimize carb balance concerns somewhat. I see an air pan and one of those early '60s mailbox looking scoops. I'm guessing fenderless with an open hood?
hey.I like it.Dont know anything about balancing out the flow for the carbs really, but looks cool!!Dont think I ever really seen anything like that in a truck?!
Looks cool. "Homemade" is a good bragging rights type of deal. If it was me, I would make the runners just a little more rounded at the corners, and not so angular. But that's me. You built it...and I would see how it runs before any mods are done to it to make it look better in other peoples' eyes. Run it. Enjoy it. Change it up if it doesn't work right. I know that there is the "form/function" theory, but get the function first...then go with form. Tito
I think most projects started deserve to be finished. I also think this one really deserves to be finished. At least finish it, and if you dont like the way it looks/performs on the project, it might look good on a shelf! Another option is it can magically turn to cash if youget in a pinch!
Thanks for all the feedback. The HAMB has given me the power to continue on!! Last night I had my doubts about the intake. The runners are probably larger than they need to be, but the orginal plan was to have one carb per cylinder. I got worried about one carb going bad, so I went with common plenum to help balance out any carb problems. The plenum is split side-to-side, with a little communication between sides. The theory of the round tubes were to carry cool air through the intake, but I doubt the have any actual function. The do look kind of trick from the front, because you can see all the way through the intake. I have no idea how it will perform, we will all see in a few months! Keep that feedback coming, there has got to be someone else that was crazy enough to try and build their own intake.
