I am near Birmingham AL and am looking for recomendations for upholstery work. I'm building a wood bodied 1950 Dodge Power Wagon. It has three bench seats that need to be upholstered, I could drop these off. My real problem is that I need to get the top upholstered and need to get someone to come to my place to do it. The truck is over 7 feet tall and was delivered to me in a semi. Other than an open trailer I have no way to haul it. Alabama, Tennessee, maybe Mississippi Or Georgia? Who have you used that could do some quality 50s era upholstery?
I thought Paul Atkins had retired? Thinking I read that a few years ago.... We share the same last name, but I don't believe we are any kin. I know I sure didn't get any talent like he did, lol!
Google Paul Atkins Interiors. Pictures of his work. He is not retired. Just called and they are still in business and taking orders for new interiors. 256-352-9608.
Myrick has it right. A Paul Atkins interior is probably out of the price range of most HAMBers and is definitely not cheap. I was fortunate once and had an interior done on my 35 Chevy by one of Pauls ex employees at a fraction of the cost. It did however have one of the Adkins signature looking overhead consoles. That interior was a big selling point when I sold the car.
All 3 of those pics are cars I’m familiar with. The blue 32 is from Goolsby Customs. A stunning RPU. The burgundy one I was part of. Paul s***ched the interior, the chrome pieces are JHRS items. The Black one is all JHRS. The interior from these high end places are more than the s***ching. It’s all the handmade parts and pieces.
Absolutely I will probably learn to sew if I ever have a ride with an interior beyond duct tape or blankets.
River Rags in Coden Al (near Mobile) did a very nice job on my off theme Maverick at what I thought was a good price. Shirley has a Facebook page and can be reached at: 251 391-9162. Will add she only works on one job at a time so work gets done in a timely manner.
Phil Cato Custom Auto Upholstery in Tucker, Ga. 515-822-5851. Phil used to work out of the Martin Brothers shop in Texas. Could be too far for you to travel from Alabama. Checked mileage from you to Cato's, about 280 taking I 20 east.
One thing I will always remember about an interior was when I saw a friends 55 Chevy that just had an interior done for $5500.00 and I asked him how he liked it. He replied " I wish I had spent $10,000.00 for an interior I liked". Its the worlds greatest truism "You Get What You Pay For."
Thanks all for the help! I'm familiar with M&M but they appear to be in the middle of their annual SEMA crunch right now. Called Paul Atkins and spoke to his wife?, he's out of town till next week. Sent him some pictures and she said he would get back to me next week. I'll wait to see what he says and go from there.
SEMA is cancelled. Friend of mine just dropped a ride off there Friday. I can get him to check if ya want me to. if ya use Paul of M&M make sure you have a thick wallet
I started a project thread on the truck, picture here if you're interested. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/50-power-wagon-woodie.1201808/
Cancelled!!!! I shouldn't have needed to be told that. I looked at M&Ms facebook page, didn't look at the date. I've heard they're a little pricey, fortunately for me the owner is more concerned about getting nice work and getting it in a reasonable time frame than price. I'll wait to hear from Paul, if that doesn't work out I'll try M&M. Thanks.
The SEMA announcement came out yesterday. When did ya talk to em? edit: The M&M my friend dropped off his ride is another M&M. Apparently we got 2 M&Ms
Very impressive. If you're interested there is a thread on the Ford Barn posted by GB SISSON about a 47 woodie he built from scratch based on a '47 1/2 ton jail bar p/u.
