To be honest, I thought it was a cooler car as the Morrari. It was a Hot Rod, adapted for the job it had to do. And now, that part of its history is erased... Same happened with the Pat Hoare Ferrari. Even Enzo said that that was the fastest road driven Ferrari in the world at that time ( when the GTO was new ) And now that is also brought back to the single seater it started out as. I really hope they saved the Hot Rod parts off those two cars, so those versions can be re-created as well...
By 1967, would Coppins have already replaced the original 283 V8 with a 327? I ask because I own the car that the 283 came out of and I'm trying to create a time line for when the motor went into a boat. Thanks.
the good old days alright, all comer saloons and formula 5000's, best things to ever go round the sealed track I ever saw... thanks for the memories
We had a cool one down here - never really got into it big-time. It was a late 50's Jag ch***is, a MK1 Zephyr body shortened into a two-door with '48 Ford rear fenders grafte on and leaded into it. Powered by a LincolnY-block type motor from the Deep Cove power scheme (a stand-by generator motor) with twin four-barrels. It got street-driven in the late 70's/early 80's then split up. The only item I could track down was the motor, I think Harry Oprwood has it up in Ch-ch.
Hi Steve, I still own the 37 and have it here in az, When I have a little more time will fill you in on the history. PS; still has all the old shell scrutinering p*** stickers on the quarter drivers window, just like your favorite underpants you keep them forever. Kindest regards to you all Kevin Green
Interesting thread. I bought the custaxie as a roller from Thompson sometime around 1971/1972. All the goodies had been stripped out of it at that time. It sat under a tree in my mums front yard in Manurewa for a long time. I eventually sold it so I could head over here to the USA in 73. Damned if I can remember who I sold it to.
Here's a pic of my old Chevy Coupe in Manurewa, not long after I started to strip it down to be a gr***track racer. Cannot even remember who I sold this to when I left for USA
Hi Kevin, here is a pic of you and your fast '37 Chev at Pukekohe, ahead of Robin Tanner in his '39 Ford, and according to the caption he was about to fly past. and one better pic of Robin's '39. Both pics from Robin Tanner. Glad you're doing well Kevin, I used to buy stuff from your shop in Auckland. All the best. Bruce.

I know this is a very old thread, but I have only just stumbled on it recently.. Anyway, here is a shot I took of Rod Coppins in his 38, V8 Chev coupe.. He had just finished the V8 conversion and was giving it a workout in the Gisborne Car Club's hill climb.. Held on "Holden's Hill" sometime in the late 60s early70s..
Here’s a bump on a great thread. I may add a few more. Pics all taken earlier this year at Ruapuna except the Trevor Crowe MGV it was day earlier at my great friend Russell Haines in Ashburton. Built in early 60s I believe by Trevor & my old mate Murray Baker. Enjoy
Some photos of the Custaxi when I bought it off Thompson, it had a Y block in it at that time Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
