Hey guys, mid way through replacing gears and bearings in my 1940 steering box and I’m up to the sector shaft, had a look and the pin through the gear looks to be peined over on the ends, I’m guessing from factory? How do y’all go about replacing it? Or is that one that’s better left alone unless absolutely necessary? I’ve searched every possible term I can think of and can’t seem to come up with any threads on it! Thanks legends! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I unsuccessfully replaced one once. I can't remember how I removed the peened end, but I do remember that I didn't thin the new washers enough. The roller didn't turn easily enough. So the car had too tight steering. I ended up replacing the sector with a very nice original I found at a swap meet. If you can grind the end off the pin, then drive it out, it should be doable. Just make sure you get the washers sized correctly. I put a tack weld on the ends of the pin after reinstall in the sector. Make sure there is none globbed on the side to hamper full turning.
As a side note, and this depends on what you are doing: If you are replacing gears, new LHD ones make a RHD box turn in reverse.
Just centre punch the pin and drill down with an 1/8 drill then a 1/4 just enough to weaken the peen, then punch it out, there not that hard. Have just another two this week. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
i tried and failed on one years ago. cant remember the issue, but seems to me that pin is hard as hell. Neil in ca the steering box wizard had some discussion here on a thread once, but sorry i have no idea where it is
It is a terrible task. I had to grind the swedge with a die grinder to remove the pin. The washers really should be machined on a magnetic plate on a surface grinder to get the correct clearance.. I lucked out and one old washer and one new washer were perfect. I welded the new pin in but should have welded a tab to the pin and the shaft. The welded pin can not ever be removed now. I have a fair shaft if interested.
