Just bought a Chevy truck and driving back to Oklahoma from Miami. Brakes have developed a noise and need oil changed badly. Looking for recommendations on trusted mechanic in the area. It is a 1986 c10, don’t think was driven much. I don’t have a jack or anything to remove wheel and check out. Wanting to make sure safe to drive home.
Exactly my first thought! I remeber going to the museum when I was maybe 14-15 yrs old. He was working on a yellow 46-8 Ford in his garage. I yelled to my dad to stop! I got out and hung out with Big Daddy for a while!
Don't take much to pull into a parts store and purchase a few items that will help you do it yourself. Change the oil in the carpark. All you need is oil, a plastic dish, and a couple of hand tools and with a wheel brace and a cheap jack you can see what is going on with your wheel. Then work out how much help you need.
Fort White Automotive about a hour north of Ocala. Dave is a good guy and will get you fixed up. Joel
Thanks for the replies, I found a shop that changed the oil and couldn’t find any brake noise or problem with the brakes. Just loud squealing noise all the time, when I get home I’ll check it and get it fixed.
If they squeal or make noise but stop reasonably good it might be rust on the rotors or drums depending on front or rear. That usually goes away in a few miles though. If the seller lived on or drove over a gravel/dirt road a lot that can cause noise too. Or pads or shoes worn down. Most tire shops that have front end brake service will do a "free" brake check.
It was not driven much lately and stored in an air conditioned building. All the brakes including calipers and rotors look brand new. He just had the rear drums converted to discs, I think possibly backing plate or something is quite right. The shop that looked at it had strict policy for customers in shop, so I couldn’t check very well myself. I have made it to Birmingham AL so far no problems just the squealing noise. Thanks
