Is anyone sucessfully running a Wico mag w/ locked out (non-adjustable) timing on the street? If you are, please elaborate on your engine setup. thanks!
i tried to run one recently. it was brand new that i found. low speed and idle were poor due to weak spark at low rpm. i feel its only useful as intended. on ag machinery or a race car with no starter or battery. a good points setup will work better for you.
I talked to a mag rebuilding expert today that I dug up in the hamb archives and he said the magnets in a mag are only 100% for around 8,9 years. So new old stock doesn't have the same ring to it when it comes to magnetos. He ALSO said if I find one that sparks don't send it to him because it's probably fine. What does that mean? ( i.e.most are 70 plus years old) He confused me too. I found a nice wico for my A for cheap and was sweating the purchase for the timing issue, now I gotta sweat the bitch idling also, according to Jetmek's "been there done that" chime. Some stuff is for race only and when it comes to magnetos they aren't kidding? I hope someone has figured it out because a wico will look bitchin next to the latest 30's racing gems I just bought for my trusty(not, LOL) model A.
Very old post but I was wondering if anyone has figured it out yet. I have a wico in my B engine and would really like to try and run it. Any advise would really be appreciated. I do plan to send it to my mag guy for a check up to see if he can do the advance/retard thing on it.
