Engine is a Buick 425 nailhead in a 64 Riviera. I bought some Speedhut gauges, and one is a oil temp gauge. Where can I put the oil temp sender? There's a oil pressure port on the bellhousing p***enger side, behind the head near the distributor. Has the idiot light sender on it now, putting the oil pressure sender there. Could I run a T off of it, one port for the oil pressure, one for the oil temp?

Is there any other hidden ports I should use?

oil temp gauges usually require welding a bung into the oil pan. there is no factory place on a nailhead to just hook one up. It needs to be in the oil like a water temp gauge needs to be in the coolant

That's what I was afraid of. I don't have a welder or a means to lift the engine up to get the pan out.

How do you feel about something like a perma-cool filter sandwich adapter? Read a guy took one, removed the temp valve, and plugged his oil temp and pressure senders into the ports. I suspect temp would read a little low.

Read something of a guy with a 351 put a T on the oil pressure port, and later moved the sender to the pan. Had a solid 30 degree higher reading, so I see what you mean.

Yeah, Oil temp isn't one of the usual gauges hot rodders typically use. Why do you want one?

Not needed, just wanted. One of those things that if I can make it happen, i'd like to. I have one on a OT corvette, I like it to keep tabs on the motor. I pay more attention to it than water temp. Here in the desert, overheating happens quickly.

cool, It won't be accurate unless you weld a bung in the oil pan for the sender....

  8. It gets hot in the desert for sure,,,,,but wouldn’t the coolant overheat first ?
You could always use an oil cooler I guess,,,,and tee in there,,,just an idea .
But I think you are concerned over nothing,,,,,the water will boil before the oil
And the oil cooler might restrict flow,,,,,,?

The rear main seal leaks, i'll have to deal with it at some point. Maybe I can get a bung welded in then.

I've noticed on the vette that the oil gets hot first, then the coolant. Don't know if that's normal or i'm misunderstanding the order of events. That car has a questionable radiator though, it gets hot coming off the freeway. I probably spend too much attention to gauges. Doc told me I may have ADD, I told her that's fine as long as it doesn't start multiplying.

There aren't any other places to access the oil on a nailhead. If it is an electric gauge, and the sender is small enough, would it be possible to install it in the oil drain plug?

Anyone tapped a hole on the oil filter adapter before? Is it aluminum and not some pot metal? Should I tap it for a larger adapter instead of 1/8th on the sender?
Reading that it's the second best location, as there's hot oil coming from the pan going to the filter. Thought i'd put it there until I could put it in the oil pan later.
