I admit to a preference for 2 doors but there's absolutely nothing wrong with 4. I think the secret with a 4 door is not to do too much to it. Add some period accessories like an outside visor, skirts and maybe a set of Venetian blinds for the rear window.
Sometimes just shaving the rear handle is a help (aesthetically). Wasn't it 2 doors for hot rods and 4 doors for customs?
Those 4 dr bashings are lame as hell. Any old car on the road is awesome...sure values might differ but I've seen lots of cool 4drs both stock & kustom.
I have a more-door because I didn't want to spend a stupid amount of money for a two door hard top version of my car. I was able to get my nice original car for the same amount of money asked for a two door hardtop in terrible condition. 452523.jpg by Bleach posted Mar 8, 2013 at 10:53 PM
I agree. I have seen numerous 4 dr models that are quite stunning. Having a family with three daughters, the more door was a serious consideration. locally I have seen a Buick Invicta custom with 4 drs and the car is down right gorgeous.
After a night of drinking, and you have a buddy barf down the back of your neck after swerving to the side of the road and scrambling to swing the seat forward to let him out makes 2 extra doors seem like the BEST invention ever!!!!
another consideration at the time a 4 door was less than a 2 door.price was a consideration then as today.
The 56 Ford 2 dr HT was $100 more than my Town sedan. The 2dr post was almost $50 less than my car. I would have thought the 4 dr would be more expensive than a 2dr HT, at least to build, because of all the extra parts and labor.
Say what you want about 2 or 4 doors, when I was in high school, if you were driving a four door, you'd better have your mom's permission. I'm a doorist, two doors or nothing. Back when our cars were built, they were all built around the two door model so four doors don't look right to my old eyes. That's the coolest thing about this old car hobby, who cares what others think, I've even owned a Studebaker.
A former coworker and mentor frequently made the comment that two door cars were for people who didn’t have more than one friend!
My son told me that he drove four doors so his friends wouldn't have to crawl into the back seat so I asked if anyone had ever been in the back, no. He now has a 64 Coupe DeVille, yep two door.
When I was young everybody wanted a two door. A four door was an "old lady car", but now younger persons seem to like either one. I'm now just glad to still see any on the road. My youngest has a 69 two door Fairlane but just bought a four door 62 Chrysler last week to fix up. He has two little ones and another on the way so the four doors are a lot better when loading car seats.
I am on several Facebook Ford Groups and more four doors show up almost on a daily basis, here is one from today.
Guys my age who grew up in the 50 & 60's have a preference for 2 door cars, guy's growing up in the 80's and later were driving imports and most of them were 4 door cars, they have always been a part of their automotive lives. As I have gotten older I'm not anti 4 door like I was in the past, a lot of you guys know I'm a Deuce guy and I have owned 2 4 doors in the past. Personally, I am glad to see younger guys saving these multi door cars that at one time were consifered parts cars. HRP
This is a nice one belonging to a H.A.M.B. member https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/members/garagekulture13.166445/
This is probably one of the best examples of a build on a Ford four door you'll ever see the transformation from start to finish is here. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/my-54-customline-the-poison.929357/ And it is not a stateside build, there is a lot of information in this build to learn from and plenty of pictures.
I also prefer 2-doors, but have owned a couple four-doors over the years that were just nice original cars that were WAY too nice to be parts cars even though that is what I have typically considered them. I am doing some looking now for a decent driver for one of my boys to drive while we are finishing up his pickup project and it seems four-doors may be in his future mainly considering the price difference. I also like to see some of the younger folks keeping these cars on the road too.
