The Best Damn Job ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by NONAME, Jul 19, 2006.

  1. There is a old saying

"Find a job that you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life"

I really feel that way, I work on nothing but old cars. I meet great people with a p***ion for old cars. I get into shops, garages, private collections, rod and restoration shops. and when I leave they all give ME money. it just doesn't get any better than that.

I've been doing gl*** since 1965 sold my shop in 1992 and signed a no compete agreement. been doing nothing but old car since, working out of my home shop with very little overhead. don't make alot of money. always seem to get the bills paid. and I have no boss and the only pressure I have is from customers that think they are the only one building a car. I wish I had more compe***ion in this field because I have no one to send the few ***holes that I'd just as soon not work for to!!:D
I have thousands of customer car photos waiting till I build a website. I'm just going to post a couple from last week. then would like to hear how your J O B compares better or worse

yeah yeah, rub it in :D Don't think I could ever do my hobby as a job, I'd get burned out. If you know you HAVE to work on cars to pay the bills, how do you keep it fun? It becomes work if you have to do it.

I HATE my job, but it pays well and I don't have to work weekends, and I can carpool. That's about the best I can say about it.

"..and find a job you HATE and rest ***ured you WILL WORK everyday of your life."

I love my job to death, wouldn't trade it for anything. I own a shop that does vintage electrical work. I meet great people, work on great projects and get a huge amount of personal satisfaction out of it. I also get to learn new things everyday, which I also like a lot. Sure beats my former life of being stuck in a cube programming computers for the man all day long. I wake up excited to get to work now instead of trying to figure out ways to escape from it. Love it.

You get paid? ****, I have to renegotiate my contract!

I run a hot rod and custom filled magazine. There are definitely worse jobs! 15-18 weeks on the road a year can be rough, but it is also fun.

toy desinger, been flying arounf the state demo'ing a new flying toy
I come up with new concept for toys and build them. O yeah and my work is in Malibu right in front of surfrider beach!
but even my work is stressful deadlines and stuff comes up.
That line "Find a job that you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life"
I have reserved thoughts about it.
because if you think about it you become a slave to what you like to do.
Your favorite thing to do becomes your life and then you have to find another hobby.
For example I happen to have a buddy that works in the Adult film industry.
He'd been doing graphics for companies about 6 years, he's not affected and is numb to most adult films.

If you love cars you won't get burnt out. I work with old cars all day, everyday and go home and work half the night on more old cars. Been doing it like that for 2 years now and still not burnt out. I also travel a lot for work to car shows and auctions which only serve as good reminders of how lucky I am to have what I do and to get back home and back to work! There are times I am tired, but not of cars, just of working non-stop! If anything this scenario has caused me to become more car crazy! I would be way too nervous to ever do gl*** though. A few weeks ago I helped Youngbuck pull his intact rear windows from his '37 2dr sedan...what a job, a job I never want to do again!

Got an education from an old man who was just retiring. He had spent 40 years at a job and "I hated every ****NG day I came into work". What an eye opener for an 18 year old kid just starting out in the world. I made a vow to myself that day I wouldn't be repeating the old mans bitter words when the time came for my retirement. In the meantime I've had 18 different jobs, started and sold 3 businesses, and haven't done anyting I "hated" for more than 8 hours. My regular working career ended abruptly with an industrial accident but I've managed to keep my shop and equipment and only do jobs that interest me and I have time for. Life is good.

But some folks would complain about a pie tasting job at the pie factory ...

I worked at a " Gentlemen's Club " as a door man and part - time bouncer ... when I was young. " Gentlemen's Club " is a polite way of saying a strip joint  And we had guys complaining about coming to work ...

    1) free alcohol
    2) lots of naked good looking women ...
    3) work from 9 in the evening to 2 in the morning
    4) Closed on Sunday and Monday ...

    And they complained ??? :(

  20. yes, building hot rods you like all day is great...but it does have it's bad moments , like any job

today: i'm waiting for parts from the painter, was told next week..but was promised two weeks ago. repo parts from Vintique are on back order. and the Vintage Air air conditioner vents for a `40 dash don't fit a `40 dash

one good thing though...the guy at Vintage Air told me on the phone they ARE a piece of ****. at least he didn't try acting dumb and make it as my fault

i've just turned the lights off and said SCREW IT for the day.....

Well, if you can find a job working on old cars, rods and customs where ya actually get PAID for doing it...that'd be a pretty cool thing I guess! But being rushed through charity slave labor work is no fun...so carefull who ya go to 'work' for!

For now, I'm happy running my small parts hauling service. I'm on the road alot by myself, I get to meet the coolest car guys and car gals, I carry interesting cargos near and far across state lines, see some wonderfull sights, and scheduling is up to me, so there's always time to do other things I want to do as well.

Heck, this gig might even take me to the HAMB Drags this year!

(It'd be nice to meet a few of ya there!)

Insurance Adjuster - i drive around and look @ smashed up cars all day & deal with really pissed off people - cause thier 1994 Chevy Lumina is Totalled or thier Jag has a scratch so small you'd need a microscope to see it:rolleyes:

  23. I daydream often of at least working in the automotive field, or better yet, owning a hot rod and custom shop. But...I've fallen into the trap of having a house payment and bills large enough that I have to stay in my job because it pays the bills. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful to have a house, a garage, a couple of cars, and a job that lets me afford it all. The job's not bad at all, just not a "dream job"...from the stories, I'm not sure I could handle it anyway. I'd love to try :D
