All right folks, I have healed well enough from surgery to start working on my car again. What do you think of this set up: 55' 324 #10 heads which have been ported, 3 duece set up, and a cam with .480/.510 lift, 272 duration, and 106 degree lobe separation. or I could go with a .430 lift 266dur and 110 lobe sep. What do you think?
I also found a Isky solid roller cam with the following 520 lift 320 dur intake opens 52 TDC closes at 88 BDC, exhaust closes at 88 BDC opens at 52 TDC
Depends on what you want the engine to act like: cruiser or race. If you want to have high rpm power and are running all the carbs functional, and have the rear gears and trans to match, go with the 320 duration cam. If you want to cruise and have good low-endm maybe run one or two carbs, then go with the 266 duration. If you want some rumble, but still pretty good driveability, have all carbs working and progressive linkage, the 272 duration cam seems a great choice. The thing you did not list is the duration at .050, that is what really determines the cam characteristics, in addition to lift and lobe separation. I think that the 272 duration cam seems the best choice if you want some hot rod flavor, but still decent street manners and reliability. That roller will require constant maintenance.
Rule of thumb--without actual measurements. is subtract 48 degrees to have a idea of the duration at .050------302-48 =254 wild 272-48 =224 good street
Went with the 480/510 272 dur. it is going in my 55 olds with the hydro and stock gears. Now to get it going!
