    Hi all,
I got a 1953 Mercury engine from a friend. He told me it rund very fine.
I cleaned it and found out it was redone sometime ago. 0,04 over.
Than I found the scar on this valve ...
    What can it be ...?
The area around looks rougher as the rest of the surface ..
    Any ideas..? ....opinions...?
    Thanks a lot in advance

  2. Looks like a casting flaw to me. Also looks like you have a couple of cracks....between the bolt hole and the coolant hole, and from the valve seat to the cylinder wall......

Your friend got you to haul off his heavy s**** iron, looks to me.
The crack would need repaired and figure putting in exhaust seats.

  4. Yes,,,,, the crack between the bolt hole is nothing to be worried about .
The crack from the valve seat aiming to the cylinder needs attention.
It can be repaired and a new seat installed,,,,no problem.
But,,,,it definitely needs to be fixed .
