I’m dealing with leaking valve seals and a squealing throw out bearing.. the stock 350 is ready to be pulled but instead of putting seals in the stock heads would a set of ready to go 461’s be usable with a 142 supercharger? Not looking for performance gains either I smokescreen the gas station when I pull away and people give me the evil eye.
If the valve seals are worn, the rings are next. May be time for a quick overhaul. Just thinking out loud here.
Without knowing the casting number on the heads you currently have if they are 76 CC’s you will increase the static compression ratio with the ‘461 heads with their 64 CC chambers. Running a 142 blower I doubt the ‘461’s will give you any trouble but be sure to listen for spark knock. If you hear the engine rattling when you get on it than back off the timing until it is satisfactory.
I think if everything was blueprinted to factory specs you might have an 8.6-1 compression ratio, not high enough to get into trouble, and for sure your factory short block will give a lower ratio. Just be sure to listen for spark knock, adjust timing if necessary and drive it. Oh, and if you started with a used 350 that was not bored and fitted with new pistons and rings then don’t worry about having to open up the ring end gaps. The cylinder bore taper has already done that for you.
You might want to get a clarification of what " ready to go" means if you are buying a set of freshened "461"heads from someone you don't know.
we got the heads from a mom and pop shop were we have had work done before. I’m sure the heads are ok
You can replace valve stem seals without removing the heads. Are the valves in good shape? Have you done a compression test?
The old-timer's rule was 10cc in the chamber is about 1-point of compression. 76cc to 64cc is 12cc, so about 1.2-points in static compression. We cannot know where you are going, if we don't know where you are now. What is the bottom end? Is it stock? If it is, what is the code on the pad on the front? Jim has the master list of those, and can tell you what it is/was.
Put your ‘461’s on and don’t worry about it. Even if he does get 8.6-1 like I said earlier it will be fine with a 142 and if there are many miles on the blower the Teflon strips are worn too. That was one of the faults with the B&M and Weiand blowers.
