I was down at the UK's hot rod guru's secret headquarters last Monday and he unveiled a very nice flathead with Motor City aluminium heads and matching manifold and told me they were the best he's ever used. I've never seen them before and am up for listening to anyone's opinions on them, good or bad. Do they make a 49-53 version? Thanks Neil
Old post I know, but I’m interested too. They only make pre ‘49 heads but not many other details out there.
@61klassic since you are in the UK I’ll guess you are familiar with the old nursery rhyme “London Bridge Is Falling Down”, the same might be said of Motor City Flatheads. I do not mean to make light of Mark Kirby’s health issues, only to say how I feel the business went off the rails. Kirby had some excellent products and the shop built a lot of complete engines too but then a plan was hatched to produce a new aluminum V8 block. One thing led to another and eventually he and his team reengineered too many elements and priced the aluminum block out of the market. The aluminum block sounded good and some improvements in porting were expected but then the port locations and sizes were changed so much there was a need for smaller diameter and relocated head studs. Naturally that meant new proprietary heads which obsoleted any old Sharp, Evans or Meyer heads someone might want to use. They also went to a roller cam, unique valve guides, revised oil pan, water pumps, front cover, cam gears, Fluid Damper balancer and more. For the average hobbiest the upgrades put it out of reach ($$$$$) and that is why I believe the project was shelved. Flathead guys might have wanted one but how many could pay for one, or justify the cost. Another Michigan firm, Shadow Rods took on the MCFH line and they have an online presence at shadowrods.com or you can email them here info@shadowrods.com @DjNeil the Shadow Rods website only mentions the early 24 stud heads.
