Hey, I was just wondering if anyone on here who had experience importing cars into the US from Canada could answer a few questions for me. I have a US-made 1955 Belair that may need to be imported into the US. On the customs website, it says that Canadian made cars can be imported into the US from Canada free of charge, but it doesn't say anything about a US-made car being imported from Canada. Does anyone know what, if any, fees will be charged? Also, what paperwork will be needed to bring the car from Canada into the US? Thanks in advance!!
I drug my '33 Ford over the border and they couldnt care less. They just asked what I was up to. Told them I bought the car and am bringing it back over. Maybe I got lucky???
I actually read that if the car is just for personal use, you could bring it over free of charge. I thought I read that wrong, but apparently maybe not! Can anyone else shed any light on this subject for me?
I have sold several cars over the boarder. As long as they are older than a certain date (I believe its 15 or 20 years), originally US made or certified for sale, and under a certain dollar amount (its something like $2000), you just basically go through with no tax. Newer cars have some additional taxes in some states for things like AC, and cars that were never certified for sale in the US can have some major issues (like the people trying to import Nissan Skyline GTR's - never sold in north america). And if its over a certain amount they usually want their sales tax money...
If you are bringing a car that was manufactured in the U.S. back into the States from Canada, there is no charge or fees. It's considered 'Goods Returned'. A friend of mine grabbed a Caddy from London, ONT. a few years back and that's what they told us at Customs. I'm not sure what kind of paperwork, if any, is needed at the border. Title, bill of sale...???
