I took my greasy items to a friend's shop who has a parts cleaner. Got home, wiped them clean with lacquer thinner and painted everything, then did the ***embly. Looks 100% new.

I know I have seen references to a manual or guide for the front end on these cars. Anybody know of a site to download that?

Someone had one online, but the link was taken down by the owner.

  4. Hey guys, I'm working on my idler arm, my car is a power steering car, or it was... I got the idler kit from C&G with the bushings included. When I removed my old one it hat zerk fittings and bearings instead though. I wouldn't question using the C&G kit except the bushing height is quite a bit taller than the drag link thickness were it presses into. Anyone experience this or know if it will be an issue? I did find a bearing kit but still doesn't seem to be exactly what came out of the car.

This is a great thread, and I'm glad I found it through the search tab. Does anyone know how I measure the 19/32 that the 52-54 manual mentions when ensuring the proper angle of the idler arm to bracket and draglink?

There is a company in Stockton Calif that has steering and suspension parts for Fords (and everything else) going back to 1941. The quality is good on anything I have bought there. It is called Rare Parts Inc. , the web site is www.rareparts.com . Worth a try if you can't find what you are looking for.

Ditto on Rare Parts. I got my made in USA forged upper control arm shafts from them.

Thank you nosford, I've been looking for a good quality set of ball joints. I bought some from Dennis Carpenter years ago but the rubber is already garbage.

The picture shows the page from the 52-54 manual and specific paragraphs that explain how to install the idler arm using the 19/32" +or- 3/64" measurements. Can I use a caliper to get this measurement? 54 Idler Arm.jpeg
