1960 Chrysler's - Let's see 'em!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kustomike, Jul 21, 2006.

  1. I have had my '60 Chrysler Windsor 2 door hardtop for about 5yrs now, I just picked up the rebuilt rearend for it on Tues. I'll be putting it in this weekend. Finally some real work going into this car after too long a wait. I'll be going for a full kustom treatment minus a chop top in the future but for now I'll just be happy to drive her around. Well just wanted to share some of my pics with the rest of you Hambers. :)

Great car Mike... will be fantastic project. Here is one from Sweden... mildly chopped (2,5 inches). Body work was done by Klas Forsberg a Swede living in CA.

Here is a pic of my '60 New Yorker. Hopefully I can find time in the next couple of months to get the disk brakes installed on the front. I have everything to do it, except the time.

  8. Thanks Rikster. I've seen only a small photo of that green Chrylser before. Do you have more photos? The black with white roof and scalloped Chrysler is super clean. Keep 'em comin'!:D

Man is this car gorgeous. I passed on a supercheap '63 New Yorker today just because I couldn't talk myself out of thinking it was ugly. How could a company let lines like this devolve into a disjointed mismash in only three years?

That green car is great. As a contrast, here's one I saw out in Eastern Washington last weekend. I think it's a 1963?

the 57-61 chryslers were incredibly beautiful. once they cut the fins off in 62 it kinda lost it all but ya cant beat the canted lights in the 61 & 62s. 63 & 64 were kinda ugly. mines a 65 (see big profile pic) & she has some really nice lines. i think im bias because i never really see any other 65s that i like that much except for mine. i think because its black, lowered & has chrome wheels. this winter ill be building a custom tube grille, shaving, nosing & decking it & modding the tail lights a bit for a late 60s mild custom look.

its amazing how dramatically the styling changed in the chryslers between 55 to 65.

The '60-61 Chryslers and DeSotos were sure different. Very Jetsons.

    I like em. :)

Here's a few. Plus a '63 to show that they aren't complete turds.

These pictures bring back memories. I took my drivers license test in a 1960 4dr Windsor - 36 years ago.

  27. Not mine but in case you've got Camino /Ranchero on the brain.....

this was built from a '61 NYer station wagon - the back end of the roof was moved forward, a second tailgate was used as the headwall of the bed and that gave it a roll down electric window in the back of the cab. Chrysler 300 bucket seats are in it with a 300 partial console and a 300 crosshair grille. I know where its at - I ain't tellin'

    Hey,

The '61 Models were really the last ''Pure Exner" styling! When you look how far Virgil Exner took styling at Chrysler from the 1949 models up to the 1961's, you see a stark progression of styling ideas. Chrysler Corporation had always been a company run by the engineering and drafting departments, but not the design department. Virgil Exner started to turn that around in 1955. With his "Foward Look", and his strong beleif in the "fin" as a paramount styling element, as well as his designs that featured lower, wider bodies with more glass area, this was no longer the Chrysler of days gone by! By the '61 model year Chrysler's management had grown tired of the design risks, and Exner's "controversial" styling elements that whyle they were industry leaders in '57 had grown long in the tooth by '61-'62. They wanted a safer, more sober design in all of their car lines. They used the occation of Exner's massive heartattack and his leave of absence to draft in a new head of design.
Exner was replaced by Ellwood Engle formerly of the Ford Motor Company, and the designer of the '49 ford, '61 Thunderbird and the '61 Lincoln Contential. If you've ever wondered why the '63 on Mopars look so slab sided and Ford-like, there's your answer.

How could I've missed this topic all that time?! Guess I should also use the Search more and dig up old topics I guess ;)

    Here's my '60 Chrysler NewYorker.
The car was green when I bought it, but I recently painted it semigloss black and added some scallops.
Under the hood resorts a 496ci strokermotor with an original longram-intake system. The longrams where only standard on the 300-models at the time.
