This thread had a pretty fair cool factor before, but the whole grille shell story takes it to a next level. And definitely leave the parts for the next guy...
One of my favorite parts of building cars from old stuff is that every single piece has some story to it. The grill is a pretty good one though I must admit/ agree @dumprat yeah it’s nothing I’m scared of either way
@Tim I agree completely! Building a car should be about the stories about scrounging parts and the people you meet along the way. Otherwise you might as well just order a new corvette and drive around in circles by yourself.
Yeah, I ramble haha but I kinda like the threads that end up a small... I don’t know, group. A little conversation. feels closer to ********ting in the garage when I was younger and friends would either be there every day or pop in and out casually.
Wish I could take the credit, gave it to my buddy Ryan and said ok weld it all up nice and he just kinda went whole hog on it lol. Way past my expectations
Looks like he’s got the rest of them built up and smoothed out. Dropped off some high temp paint and he’ll use his shop stuff to get it baked on instead of me trying to heat cycle it on the motor. When given the option of painting something on or off the car it always seems off the car works best so I figured we’d go that route with the heat setting as well since it’s an option this time. let’s see if that 9 year old can of paint on my shelf matches the intake as well as I think it does lol.
Yeah I’m looking forward to bolting it on. we will add a flang to connect to the head pipe when we get around to that. Figure everything is so tight that the angle or style of the flange could make a difference between an easy fit and a new cuss word being invented lol. thinking a triangular three bolt flange will be the shape. Most early cars seem to just be a u shaped muffler clamp to the head pipe or if it’s got a big collector it has a cap and a little pipe into the exhaust. So I’m just going to go with what fits and doesn’t look like 2020 ie a band clamp or mesh flex joint
Cleaning up the yard for winter I realized half the pool had sun bleached to the point of becoming brittle and holed. still holds about 30+ gallons of hot water I can dump acid flakes into though
24 hours and it’s looking great! Not the strongest mix but working just fine. Only nasty spot is the inside of one of the rims and it’s getting mushy so I have hope for it. flipped the wheels over and laid the grill flat totally submerged and will check it again tomorrow. I know that it’s likely my “clean” areas that are still wet with acid water and sitting above the fluid line may flash a little but I don’t think it’ll be bad. anyhow updates
Me too! Lol makes me want a bigger tank and sit the whole car in it.I’m walking around looking for lose stuff to stick in there now
That’s actually what I was thinking. If it was a sturdy permanent thing you could use it for about forever. I’m sure I’m waisting a lot by mixing it per job. a horse tank could be tall and narrow enough to dunk wheels, cowl top, fenders and wheels no problem
Does that **** freeze...I mean I'm in Iglooville Ontario...is that stuff toxic...if your on a well that might be an issue in disposal or leakage...I've done the Vinegar method quite successfully on some smaller things but it's vinegar. I do care even if on municipal services that I dispose of toxics in the municipal sites...just being a good Stogy...
Dan this is obviously a robust container that may be galvanized...will the acid react with it...I'd hate to have clean parts but not be able to enjoy it due to inhaling a toxic plume...just thinking out loud fellas...
@Stogy, I'm ***uming he's using something like oxalic acid (that's what I thought of when he said flakes). That acid is most commonly used with wood, like deck flooring. Anyway, in this usage, that pool can be neutralized with baking soda. Amounts vary but all you'd need to be proper would be some baking soda and pH strips. In my shop, I use muriatic acid mostly and when I'm done, I'll dilute it and add baking soda. When it's neutral, I'll dump it in the gr***. What will happen if you use a big galv tank, is the galv will be removed and flash rust after usage. I've seen guys use plastic barrels or IBC totes to keep from dealing with rust. Sorry for the derail, @Tim !
I've been side tracked with deer season but we will be butchering tomorrow so that'll be done with. I have had some time to seal the leaky aquarium. I tried some spray Flex Seal. ? So I can try some more citric acid. What little I was able to do came out great but now it's cold so I'll have to move it inside.
