i realize that this is kinda worthless without pics, but i don't have my desktop set up yet and i need it to upload pics. does anyone have any tips as to how much rust on wheels is able to actually be removed. i have some pretty good size sections that are beyond pitting and look like they have that "crumbly" look to them and would definitely need beadblasting if there's any chance, but how much can i actually expect to bring them back?
What kind of wheels are they? Where on the wheel is the rust? If they are normal easy to replace steel wheels, replace them. If they have "crumbly" rust they might not have structural integrity and might be dangerous. If they are valuable irreplaceable wheels they might be worth saving. I have cleaned up and used wheels with minor pitting but "crumbly" sounds scary. i have also repaired tractor wheels, welded in new metal, they tend to rust out around the valve stem when you run water in the tires, but they are low speed, do not need to be balanced. Good luck!!
Beadblast them and see what's left. That should give you a good idea of what you have and whether or not they are worth saving.
