Technical Building a new Winfield...

So I was keeping an eye out for a enough parts to piece together a pair of Winfield S-B downdrafts... and basically found nothing worth paying money for. So I started building what I needed... I’ve already made the choke horns and V band clamps, as I figured that was as far as I would go. But after sifting thru a half a dozen cracked, stripped, and broken carbs bowls only to salvage a couple brass pieces, I decided to go “all the way”! At least I’ll have a matching pair when I’m done!

Casting these would be great...! Would be a lot less work and could get the engraving just rite too. But have to weigh the cost of tooling against volume, not to mention the tooling charge to set up each run at the foundry... oh yeah, all the different pieces too...

Billet will just have to work for now... especially with my budget

 

Only CNC stuff I know about is seen on TV, is this piece just a block that gets clamped in a fixture and everything we see is machined away without another setup? Bob

Yup! Here’s an action shot...

 

I’ve gone down the foundry route many times... iron, aluminum, bronze, sand, loose pattern, match plate, cope/drag, investment, 3D printed investment... it’s all just a hassle! My projects are never big enough to get the foundries attention, and so I end up waiting 6-8 months to get poor quality castings, damaged patterns, and angry customers! I’d rather cut everything from solid and be in control of my own destiny! It takes a bit longer per part, and doesn’t have the “feel” of a cast part, but I get it done!

Tod is certainly doing good work, and clearly has the connections to get priority during development and short production pours. I am not nearly as connected, and so don’t get the same level of service. Also, producing my own patterns has been a handicap as the foundries tend to prioritize their own creations first.

This is just my reality, and lucky for me... most of my designs do not require hollow cavities and so can usually be made from solid with enough patience.

Got distracted... and started making the tooling to spin up new brass fuel floats for the Winfield S and SR carburetors.

I suppose you could go over the oblivious areas with a needle scaler to sort of give a somewhat cast appearance and make it less obvious that it was billet. Mr. Bill aka @wstory has used that technique with success on his project.

Having said all that, I think you are doing amazing work!

 

The carb body will be blended and then tumbled to give a much less billet look... here is a couple shots of the choke horn before and after tumble, and also polished...

I want to build up a copper plating system to apply an original type finish.

The tumbled finish is nice as it is basically 400 grit non directional sanding. Basically ready for painting or polishing... but I suspect would look pretty dull if I were to copper plate at this point. Would no doubt look great if the parts were polished prior to plating... but the originals definitely were plated right after casting. So will take some experimentation before I decide if copper plating is something I want to do for myself... or others.

 

Just finished the metal spinning fixtures, and should be soldering up new S and SR fuel floats this time next week...
