Planned on going over and working on the new shop today. Plan on opening 7/31 and still so much to do. Our 12 yo Lab layed at my feet all morning while I drank coffee and read the HAMB.

About 9:00, the wife took the dog for a walk. Turned bad. Our dog was diabetic and has had trouble breathing the last 6 months. The wife usually take her cell phone just in case something happens on a walk but forgot to take it today. Anyway, our dog had some sort of blood vessel or something (wasn't really listening to Vet) in her throat that wasn't doing what it was supposed to. It caused her not to be able to breath much. When I came out of the garage, they were just coming back from the walk and right away I could tell the dog was in bad shape. I carried her inside and layed her down. I could tell that she was really laboring to breath.

Called Vet emergency and took her in. We decided to have her put to sleep. Seems like the best thing for her. Put her in the bed of the truck for the ride home to bury her in the backyard.

I saved the very shoebox that I brought her home in when I got her on 12/24/94. (She was a X-MAS puppy)

Inside the shoebox I put my favorite picture of her, a picture of my wife and I, her food bowl, a couple treats, and one of those damned doggie ice cream treats that she just had to have every night.

As my wife and I are unable to have kids, this was our baby. Those of you with dogs and no kids know what I mean.

Today started out just like any other weekend. By noon, the Vet was injecting her with a needle while I held her head and paws. By 2:00, she was buried in a hole.

    Damn.

Man , that sucks. I'm sorry.
I have kids AND a dog & I still know what you mean.
My Tank is very special to me & I hate to think of life without him. I have often thought that its a cruel twist of nature that our dogs & cats don't have as long a life as we do.

Losing your pet is the worst feeling. Especially dogs because they have so much love and personality. They really are like children for those of us without kids. Hopefully you'll feel better soon and someday maybe another puppy will be your friend.

My condolances. I had to put two down in one year, one in the spring and the other in fall.

In a feeble attempt to lighten your mood, I am gonna tell you this.

those "Doggie Ice cream treats" are terrible. you don't want one, even if they do look an awful lot like "dibs".

I've had to put two dogs down in my lifetime, took them to the vets and they both gave me the same look. If they could have talked they would have said "Thanks, I'm OK, I had a great life with you, take care, I'll see ya later"... Don't let two weeks go by without getting a replacement.

I feel for you, I've been there. I had to put our Lab down ten years ago. He was not even eleven. His hips went out to where he couldn't even stand and was in constant pain. We worked with the Vet for over a yearto try and keep him going. Our Vet grew up in Kentucky and had Labs as hunting dogs all his life. He cryed as much as me when we had to put him down. My son was five at the time and it hurt him real bad. Now we have a rescued Greyhound, a retired racer. Very docile, and sweet. Sometimes he'll just come up to you and give you a little bump with his head and look at you with those big eyes like he's saying "Thanks for saving me."

I really feel for you. I had to put down my dog last week, 14 years old. Many times he was the only one that would hang with me while I was working on a car. He didn't care what I was doing, he just wanted to be included in the fun.. It sucks...

I know the feeling as well. My first dog was put down a bit over 11 years ago now, and he was nothing but great. He was 12, but had severe blindness, and he couldn't stand up for more than a few seconds.

I'm not looking forward to the next couple of years wondering about my new dog. I got him just after we put the other one down, and he is turning 11 next month. He keeps having seizure like fits, and walks incredibly slow.

Wait a few weeks, and find yourself a new companion. It won't be your old dog, but it will fill that gap in your life, and help you recover.

sorry to hear the sad news. It's truly amazing the unconditional love you receive from a dog. I know how hard it is when that love dissapears.

    Sorry to hear the loss
We had to put down our first Aussie 4-1/2 years ago, She was an abused rescue dog, that we had 12 years. She never got over the fear of being hit, but was a great pal until she got cancer. We purchased a second rescue dog whose owner was dying of cancer with in a week, we were the fifth owners before the puppy was 11 months old, Goofy still get nervous about car rides but she has camped in 10 or more states in the last 4-1/2 years, and my wife and I both feel she is the spoiled daughter.

I am really sorry to learn of your loss. I hope you will always remember the good times you had with your dog and find peace with the understanding that you put his welfare above your own needs and desires to keep him around. That is a true friend.

As a vet, I have to euthanize animals every day. It's aways hard, people saying goodbye to their friends. I always feel I'm losing a bit of my soul-even if I know it's the right thing to do and you Never get used to it. The hardest one I ever did was my own 14 year old Lab,Thunder. He fought his cancer for a long time, but I said good by this past spring. I still look for him every night when I come home.

Thanks for being a good friend to your dog.

  24. Jimbo and Jewl are at my feet as I write this. I know the time will come when I will have to be strong for them no matter how weak I feel inside. It is a price you have to pay for their complete commitment to you. You did the right thing. When you get your wings they will be waiting on a cloud for you.

Sorry for your loss ... :(
As a pet lover ... I can really know the pain. My wifes little minature schnauzer died on my wifes birthday. The little schnauzer was 14 years, 2 months and 27 days old.

My wife insisted on getting another one ... and we have ... it is NOT the same but the new puppy is trying to fill the hole in my wife's heart ...

Get another dog and be it's friend ...

<<< Very sory about your dog. As difficult as it is to have warning and plan for the "appointment" with the vet it is even worse for it to be forced to make that decision on the spot. Have no regrets. You did the right thing.
