How about a picture of your current engine mounts? With the 327 in it, it may already have side mounts. That would be why the Danchicks appear to be the same/ mount the same?
Side mount kits for the small block in a tri 5 are easy to find and not real expensive. Here is one example https://www.ebay.com/itm/55-56-57-Chevy-Motor-Side-Mount-Conversion-Kit-V-8-NEW-/191204592159 All the tri 5 trinket vendors sell their version. That and the Right universal trans crossmember and you are done and don't have the h***le of the bellhousing mount. Your call as long as it is either supported in the middle or the engine mounts are moved back to the side so the engine/trans don't flex at the bellhousing and damage something. Way too many of us have either had one get damaged or as several of us have done, repaired them for someone else. That has been an ongoing thing ever since guys started putting Turbo 350's in their tri 5 cars in the 70's.
I didn’t notice that in his replies, but rest ***ured that side ending mount and rear transmission mount is all you need. It’s worked for 60 years or so
Planning on the leaving the front motor mounts and doing bell housing mount and cross member. Have already purchased the bell housing conversion mounts from Danchuk, don't really want to eat them and do something different.
Years ago, the shop I worked at previously did a clutch job in a Mack roll off garbage truck. The story has it that not all of the bellhousing bolts made it back in and the driver was on route and went to shift and the shifter slipped through his hand and went through the floor and he ran over the transmission with the rear tandems. I have no way of proving it, but the mental picture of this makes me laugh. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
He does not have side engine mounts, he has FRONT engine mounts. I have seen broken cases with that setup, when side mounts were not also used.. It may have worked for YOU for 60-years, but not for everyone. Front engine mounts on these are much closer together than later side mounts. I know the answer to this question already, bu do you know why GM stopped using mounts like this? I will give you three guesses.
I’m not speaking of front engine mounts, is there a different location on 327s v 350’s for side mounts?
It is not the engine that is the issue at hand here. It is the frame. His car came from the factory with front engine mounts. He is still running them. All SBCs from the first ones that came with side mounts, still had the bolt bosses for front mounts, until the SBC was retired. His 327 therefore has BOTH sets of bolt bosses. He is using the stock mounting, which was engine front mounts, bellhousing side mounts, and nothing under the Iron cased transmission. Remember the bolt boss where you can put in a long bolt, to hole the fuel pump pushrod back while installing the pump? That is one of the front mount bosses: Taking the side mounts out of the picture, and running just front mounts and a tail mount equals broken transmission case. Running the OEM setup, with no transmission tail mount equals broken transmission case. The only way around this is OEM style mounting, PLUS a transmission tail mount, or convert to engine block side mounts, and run a transmission tail mount. Breaking a transmission case at any decent speed can render a car a total loss, not to mention what it can do to any people involved.
When a brief fad for putting a steel bellhousing and a clutch on an aluminum cased Turbo Hydramatic transmission, I did the bulk removal of the bellhousing with a 4lb hammer. It was not all that hard. Running a Turbo Hydramatic transmission in a manner that is less supported that what was intended is a recipe for failure.
I agree, he mentioned his block had provisions for side mounts, hence my reply to run side mounts and rear transmission mount. I guess I shouldn't ***ume
