So the other week i sent out a steering wheel and sent it via the ups store. I check on their website to get a quote for shipping and it told me $9 for the size box i had and the weight. So i send it out and get charged $18 for it. And the reciept said 30 lbs. So i figure something is up, maybe the scale didnt clear from the previous package. So i go back and ask the guy why he charged me for a 30 lb package when it was only 10lbs. He gave me this whole big story about how if the i guess cir***frence of the box in both directions is more that 84" then they automatically charge you for 30lbs. So whats the deal? Why doesnt it say anything on the website about this? I put in dimensions of the box in the little spot where it tells you to and it still quoted me $10 for the box. Is this guy trying to scam me or is this for real? -John
sounds like he's scamming you, if you put the actual dimensions in the box on the web page (round up to the next inch) then it should calculate if it's oversize and quote you the 30 lb rate, if it really is oversize.
No way a steering wheel is oversize. This is why I use Fedex (not that UPS has screwed me, but I only recieve from them, not ship). Anytime Fedex has screwed up (minorly, and rarely) they fix the issue quickly and fairly.
the prices qouted on the UPS website and what the UPS store(an independent franchise) are never the same. that's why i have my own account with UPS and do my shipping online. then i drop it off at the UPS terminal. we have a ups store here , but i never go to it. i go to the actual UPS teminal in town. they are only open for walk-ins from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM
The UPS store is considerably higher than dropping off the parcel at UPS itself. I did the same thing the first time I shipped something...never make that mistake again! I usually check on-line for the quote and it is within pennies when I get there. Bill
Its a hustle. I was going to ship a turtle deck to N MO from KC site said 20 bucks, they wanted 120 at the UPS Store. i drove it up and had lunch with the guy still in for less than 120 and same day delivery. but i did call the UPS 800 number and quized 'em about it. the UPS store is a private business and they are not required to follow UPS priceing guidlines according to the folks I talked to. UPS lost my business not that they care.
I sold a back gl*** for a car, said i wouldn't pack it. ups store said 85 bucks. told the customer. said ok. when all was said and done 118.00 or close, boy was he mad when i tried to collect.
Well i went to both sites and was quoted about $2 more at the ups store site. Cant use the terminal since its about 45 min away on a good day. So i guess i could try one of the local shippers that uses fedex and ups. Dont really wanna use the ups store but its so convinient for me. Right in a shopping center and its open late so i can drop things off after work and not worry about rushing.
I don't want to offend anyone..........but you have to be out of your mind to use UPS! FedEx Ground has a friendly staff and better rates, they don't brake of loose stuff if that matters to you. For stuff that is too large or heavy for FedEx Ground the next step is DHL.I used Greyhound Express for an oversize box Connecticut to California and it arrived just fine.
Everyone is correct about the UPS store being more expensive, plus UPS charges extra if delivered to a residential address (whether you have a UPS accont or not). Our business, www.shiny-hiney.com sells LED taillights and we ship everything via Priority Mail, because up to 10lbs, US Mail is less than half the cost of UPS. If your shipping something less than 10lbs, check out US Mail. I don't work for the post office either, just giving an option we use for our business. 51FourDoor
Been there, That is why I do not ship anything UPS. Sometime they would bill your cridet card the extra and if your not looking at your statments you can miss it. Happen to me about 4 times. Now I use Fedex or USPS.
UPS is right on the way into town for me, very convenient, no lines like at the post office. And they actually accept cash and give you change, unlike the FedEx terminal. shipping is a *****, and each place is different, in every city.
If you use an online UPS account, you do not have to take it to a terminal. ANY driver you see must take it or the UPS store will (has to) take it. UPS store is actually Mail Boxes etc which was bought by UPS. UPS stores are higher priced than doing it online. Sounds like you got screwed to me. Clark
Even at the UPS terminals you will get screwed! I shipped two bicycles...the exact same type of bicycle! They weighed the same, and were in the same sized box. I shipped one and then shipped the other one two days later to the same guy, same address, from the same UPS terminal, but had a different person handling it the second time. The first bike went for $14, then the second time, the lady charged me just over DOUBLE that! I showed her the receipt from the one I'd shipped just two days earlier, and she just snapped, "Well, they charged you the wrong price!" Then, they clipped me for $85 to ship two tires. I don't ship ANYTHING through them anymore...it either goes through the Postal Service or FedEx, or I ship it myself!! (I also happily buy parts from Jegs because they ship FedEx...I know my parts will be here between 9:30am and 10:00am, and the FedEx driver is a car guy himself...pretty cool and always prompt!!)
The only way to ship UPS is to have your own account with them and be a UPS pickup station. It's MUCH cheaper that way.
I use PacMail, a UPS agent. They are in a strip mall and about 500 feet away is the UPS Store. PacMail is always bustling. The UPS Store always has parking spaces. The owner at PacMail gives me estimates and holds my packages for me until I get paid. From what I can tell, they get a buck or two more than dropping off at UPS which is way out of my way.
