Howdy! I've got a '39 Mercury trans in my Model A and wondering if there is any difference between the merc and a ford '39 trans? I read a comment somewhere that the Merc will have 16 teeth on the first gear and is a more desirable ratio but really i'd like some definitive information. I had a look and it had a weird serial number on the bellhousing top section, and i can't see the case number as the rear mount is still covering it. It came out of a one owner original '39 Mercury so it is infact a Merc trans for those that will doubt it. Appreciate any information! Here's a picture of it.. original paint too.
I thought that Ford and Mercury transmissions were the same and Lincoln Zephyr had the taller first gear. I have a 40 Mercury trans in the attic guess I better take a look at it.
@28A , from your pic we can “clearly” see they are the same as Ford transmissions. That aside the rear gears in a 39 merc are different to Ford in that the pinion is a solid shaft right to the transmission universal , and the gears are 3.54 .
The serial number wasn’t 99A but also wasn’t any Ford one I’ve seen either. It’ll have to take another look but it was just a random bunch of numbers and letters from memory. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
