Initially the Ram Rods only wanted members who had "hot rods" or actual race cars (or moderate to full customs). For example, my 270/283 '57 Chevy ragtop was not considered "cool enough" for them in '59. But, that changed in 1960, and I was accepted into the club. Fast forward to 1967, and my Wheeler Dealer digger wins Best Compe***ion Car in Show at that year's deal at the DC Armory - after I'd left the club.
Great stuff, Bruce. Thanks for taking the time to post your memories. There's a thread on here specifically about Aquasco that you might enjoy and there is a Maryland Social Forum also where folks would enjoy hearing your stories........photos are always welcomed......Don.
Anyone have further memories of the Ram Rods Car Club or their shows at the D.C. Armory? Post 'em up.
My dad attended the very first Ram Rod show in 1956. I have the photos he took. Then, 49 years later, as a member of the Ram Rods, I was floor manager of the very last Ram Rod car show.
....Thanks so much for adding to this thread. Sounds like you have some great memories from your time with the Ram Rods, their show and your Dad. Please take a few minutes to post up some or all of those pictures that your Dad took. Many of us would love to see them and to hear any stories that you have from those days....Thanks, Don.
I have some great memory's of attending the RR car shows 1975 & 1976 at the Armory, first real shows I ever attended, I was awe struck as a punk 15 & 16 year old. Does anyone know the last year for the Ram Rods show?
I was a member of the Restylers Car Club in Baltimore in 1964 and we had some cars in that show. As we were packing up to leave, we heard someone fire up a car while it was still inside the armory. We all ran over to see who had the balls to do that. It was a long time ago and my memory isn't so good anymore, but I am fairly confident it was the red D/G Willys posted by Oldracer. After the Ram Rods came running over and killed all the fun, I noticed the wooden floor in the armory was well singed!
.......If you might have any old photos from back in those days in the Baltimore area we would enjoy seeing them...Thanks....Don.
Various photo from the 1961 show including a great "yardlong" shot posted by Moriarity in another thread.
I remember going to a car show in DC around 1968-69. Saw the Bonnie & Clyde car! Anyway the RamRods had a big display of REAL Drag cars, mostly Mopars as I remember. But what I remember most was their Logo, two crossed Connecting Rods & Pistons. I'll never forget that!
Eightydeuce you rock, I don't have a single photograph of my days in the Restyler's Car Club, just my club plaque. Talk about going down memory lane! I remember painting that white picket fence for the show display. We had some wild times pulling into the car shows setting up with "Big Daddy G" blasting on the record player we brought with us for set up. Everyone knew we were there that's for sure.
