Anyone know what Ford engine might be in a mid seventies F-600 U-haul truck with a four-speed behind it? Not a Ford guy and didn't know where to look for the numbers but it's free and runs. looks like it could be a 351 or 390. It has a stock 2 barrel. Thanks!
It could be a 361 or 391. These are FE family engines, but I'm not sure of the differences from passenger/light truck engines. Also a 370 might be a possibility. That was a 429/460 family engine.
The 361 and 391 will have the wide intake manifold with the pushrods coming through the manifold. Look at the front of the head and if there is a seam there that makes the head look narrow and the manifold really wide, it'll be a 361 or 391. Those are the truck version of the 360 and 390, I can't remember all the differences from the passenger version but the main one is the sodium filled valves.
My bet would be a 361 in an old U-haul truck if it looks like a FE and has a 2-barrel. I'm thinking that all the 391s were 4-barrel carbs and U-haul would probably order it's trucks with the cheapest available engine. I could be wrong though.
