    Hi all,
Given these cars are 65+ years old and have often suffered the elements of time. What sort of panel gaps would have been expected back in the day. The doors seem a little all over the place but I’m working on the trunk lid at the moment. It’s a bit lop sided which I can probably fix with some slotting of bolt holes, there seems to be quite a large gap along the bottom edge. If I make it close further to close the gap the rounded section seems to drop below the opening of the rear quarter panels.
Looking at some photos in the internet lots of them seem to have large gaps here. Also I must mention I have removed the two lower bolts that hold the trunk hinge as they were creating m***ive alignment issues.
I’ve seen in one if the service manuals I have where they jack up the panel behind the rear window as part of the alignment process.
Any advice in this area would be appreciated.

Do you have pictures of what your gaps look like?

I had a heck of a time with gaps. My 54 had been in at least 2 accidents from looking at replaced panels/fenders and the work to repair those was not so good. Put everything back together and got it as good as i could. Trunk came out pretty good but the doors were another story. Trying to put a rectangle into an uneven rectangle. Got it presentable. The hood is still not square with the right fender. That was an are where an accident occured and although i cant really see what is wrong, the inner fender and outer fender seem to be fighting each other, even after loosening dozens of bolts. Everything just keeps going back to the same location which causes the hood/fender gap to be wider than i like. So i just call it a 20 footer. I also had to widen the mounting holes on trunk and door hinges to get things lined up and also had to put shims in to get things correct?? Heres a pic of my trunk. Took me almost a week of adjusting. P1160353.JPG

I'm no expert but those gaps look nice and tight to me for these old cars.

Yeah! I wish mine were that tight and straight. I'd say you have it nailed and can move on to some other work.

Yes, I wish mine were like shortshift.
The first four images are with the lid sitting what gap look ok along the bottom edge. The rear window edge looks ok, but the two sides with the curved edge are lower then the opening on the rear quarters.
The last photo is with the lid lifted up to align with the quarters leaving a larger gap.
