So, my Dad's turn signals did not work in his 59. Rewired front to back. The original plug on the switch detiorated in my hand back in 02 when I restored the car. So, I used female spade terminals. Realized they push the male spade terminals in and this keeps the switch from functioning properly. Took the switch apart. Greased it and made sure everything was copesetic. So, fast forward a few weeks. ODO sticks and speedo is bouncing. (Speedo was rebuilt about 8years ago). Car has put 3000 miles on since then. Well, I got it working but still sticks every 1000 miles. I will figure that out. But, now we are back to square 1 on turn signals. All I did was removed head unit. Unplugged the lights and now no signals again. All other lights on speedo work. Park lights work front and rear. No signals. Any help please...
Sunbeam is giving you good advice. If the brake lights work, try moving the TS lever and see if it shuts off one brake light. If it does this in both positions, the wiring for the lamps and the switch are all good and the switch is operating properly. Your problem has to be in the flasher portion of the circuit. Either the flasher isn't receiving power or the power from the flasher isn't getting to the TS switch.
The word "continuity" is bumping around in my consciousness. Spade connectors can sometimes be a little iffy if the crimps aren't factory perfect. Something as simple as pulling connections apart to check can stress the core inside the insulation enough to break the wire. I don't envy you the task because I'm sure it's not as easy as having everything in your lap. But maybe if you focus on 'the usual suspects' you will find the guilty perp right away. Good luck.
I would think that a 59 Chevy turn signal switch would be easily available. Why not replace your old one?
Check the plug at the bottom of the column. These usually have a bad connection. [especially if you're tinkering with the column/steering. give all the "male" spade terminals a 5 deg twist, and carefully plug back in. The twist is enough to preload the pair for a good connection. The bouncing speedo is the speedo cable binding [lube it]
