1940, tailights and headlight trim that's missing...a Standard as opposed to Deluxe as well I believe...that I determine by the grille...

There a mul***ude of other differences but these are what I recognize with my limited scope on 40 Fords...

It has a vent window, and it does not have a hinge out windscreen.

Tailights are a very big one corporal stripes as opposed to teardrops...then the grille

The wiper location/windshield differences that others mentioned are good ones as well...

The only SURE givaways that it's a '40 are: wiper location, fixed windshield and cowl vent. Not knowing the history of the car, you can never count on the doors, fenders, grill etc for a definite ID, as '39 Delux, '40 Standard and '40 DeLux parts can find themselves added/swapped over the years.

So, will a '40 dash bolt into a '39 without hacking anything up ?
And, on the wipers at the base thing - open cars got them in '38 ...

That I can't help you with. I would guess 'NO', but let's see if we can find someone who may know.

I don't know if it would actually fit the 40 windshield "hole", but you wouldn't be able to open it because of the '40s wiper towers. I think all you would end up with a leaky cowl vent AND a leaky windshield:p

Paging @lothiandon1940, @olscrounger @Moriarity for some swapability details being tossed around here...might as well call in the heavy artillery...;)

I'm pretty sure it's not as easy as unbolt and bolt...I look for to more yay and nays...;)

Could you expand on that lengthy reply as if its dimensionally the same and fits the opening the mechanicals could be added obviously with some repositioning which obviously involves plugging lower wiper mounting holes and relocating all mechanics above...with new holes...stuff that Hotrodders might have done...might

That said even IF it fits the opening achieving the goal would be a fair amount of work...not a bolt in.

Yep, it appears to be a '40 Standard that has the added tail-light like would have been on a DeLuxe. Of course it could be a DeLuxe that was wrecked at some point in its' life and the only available fix was a Standard hood and grille and attendant bracing and brackets. That's not likely. If the dash is intact, the speedometer would be different between a Standard and DeLuxe as well as the dash itself.. Of course, anything could have been changed over an 80 year period! Standard would have only had one visor, but a second one could have been added easily enough. As far as the '39 windshield ***embly into the '40, I've never seen it done, but noting Henry's penchant for cost-cutting, I would guess that the raw opening might possibly be the same for both years. Hopefully @olscrounger will see this and post his thoughts as he knows '40's inside and out having built a number of outstanding cars.....Don.

Just for comparison, here are some pictures that show the difference. The first picture shows a '40 Deluxe and '40 Standard. The second one shows a '40 Standard and '39 Deluxe. The last picture shows what a '40 Standard looked like stock (black car) since the yellow one has DeSoto bumpers and Deluxe headlight doors. If you really want to get picky for Coupes, '40 deck lids have an "X" pattern in the center of the inner bracing while '39s have an open square. IMG_5258.jpg

'39 and '40 Firewalls are slightly different. On the '40, one of the beads has a curve in it to clear one of the wiper motor mounting bolts. That bead is straight on a '39. IMG_6205.jpg IMG_6201.JPG
