I’d say Robert Williams remembers the dreaded term from earlier times , as well : 0275F23B-D316-47E7-BAA0-60D0D25F5D09.jpeg

I recently saw a 49 Dodge advertised on a local classic car site. He bought it from a guy who said it only needed a battery to run. He was selling the new battery with it because it didn't run after replacing it, he had no idea how to fix it and admitted he knew nothing about old cars. I must admit it was probably the most honest add to sell a car I had ever seen on that site. The add was later changed later to make it a bit more sellable. It kind of made me wish more guys were this honest when selling a car.

Drama indeed! Not to spoil the ending but after succumbing to the urges to...ohh no... “street race” Ricky flips the coupe, him and his girl friend knock heads together and land roof first into a river. Talk about a cautionary tale! I was in the 5th grade and I stole it from Penn Bernville elementary school library...still have it today! Later in HS I needed a last minute book report topic. Already knew that one by heart... easy A!

Guess I'm gettin just to damned old to comment anymore here anymore. When I look at profile pages, I'm 30 sometime 40 years senior to "get" what the point completely, and this is one of those posts. I've never heard of Henry Gregor Felson or his book. Looks like good readin though even today.
I believe its time to just enjoy what you guys put down and leave the thoughts to myself.

Customs are for getting the girls, hot rods are for getting rid of them.

you would have been the right age in jr high to read those books, Hot rod was written in 1950 and Street rod in 53

  17. @34Larry OK Debbie Downer.. that is up to you.. does it really matter if your 30-40 years older than most
guys/gals on here .. We are all here to share our love for what is traditional Hot Rods or Customs ( Kustoms) ..
I learned something from @Paul and @Moriarity .. street rod is not a newer term as I thought. I may need to read those Felsen books if I can get my hands on them.. I didn't know they existed till it was posted by them.. Learned something
    again..

  18. In the mid-50's the little books - and Hot Rod magazine as well - used "hot rod" to indicate a race-oriented rod and "street rod" to indicate a street-focused ride. It doesn't matter that other additions you all want to make (like 'resto-mod') it's all about primary focus of the car. People use the terms that they grew up with and when it changes over time, like the '80s-era Street Rod for example, we get a totally different image when we hear it used.

I read these books in jr. high and have this boxed set, too. Mine aren't autographed though. Matt Sullivan (I don't remember what he goes by on here) has a connection to the Felson family and his deuce was used on the cover of a book about the author, I think.

I have a copy of it that I picked up several years ago.
When I was little I use to check it out from the library every time my Mom took me.
I have even made the comment that I want it tossed in my coffin with me.
I also have that collection Larivee did, plus a bunch of paperback editions picked up over the years. Need to dig them out.

    Hey, Seb;
IIRC, car was pink & copper.
Larry, if you've never read the series of books, now's the time. Worth however long it takes you to enjoy them. Get them thru the local library. So what if they have to order them from another library - they're not doing much these days anyways. Felson had a decent way w/words, you could see yourself there in/alongside the action.

Looked to be bone stock. Was private messaged by another member of HAMB that saw the same add. Must have sold it as the add was removed from the Kiijii classic car section.

I read Street Rod in junior high and loved it. Got to the end and the last three pages were torn out. Some overly officious teacher protecting us sensitive little readers.

When the State Patrol did my title inspection, they classified my car as '30 Ford Roadster. But, because I didn't have fenders or windshield, they added the designation Street Rod. I accepted the paperwork, said thank you, and walked out with a smile on my face.

What, was I supposed to throw a hissy fit? ;):D

now while I can’t stand how the term Rat Rod is used by the general public to describe any car that’s older then 1970 or that has old paint.

hot rod or street rod, custom , antique, or just plain old, old car does not really bother me.

I had my 53 Chrysler called a hot rod and my 69 Lincoln called “ an old buggy “??? Just shrugged it off.

but when you are talking to guys in the hobby you should be able to differentiate between what is and what isn’t.

I worked at a shop years ago , a guy called and asked if we could repair a tire on a Ferrari.
Sure bring it in. Car was towed in and they guy was going on and on about his “vintage” Ferrari.

Didn’t have the heart to tell him it was a fiero kit car. Not sure if he thought we where that dumb, or if he truly didn’t know what he had.
