Technical Chev 250 in 1950 Pontiac

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Gasolinedeniz, Dec 13, 2020.

  1. Hi guys i have a small problem, i have a 1950 pontiac with a straight eight which is worn out and missing parts:( a friend of me offered me his 250 chevy engine which is freshly rebuild for almost nothing:) now i wonder does the bellhousing fit my original automatic transmission? What is the easiest way to put this 250 into this pontiac? This is not about to be cool, it’s about to drive as cheap as possible:) thanks in advance

  2. What is the trans in the Pontiac? Hydramatic? The Chevy 250 will take any of the GM pattern bell housing (T350, t400, T700, etc). If the Poncho bell housing has this pattern, you're away!

When I was a broke newlywed with a '48 Pontiac convertible with a tired inline 8, I dropped a 230/glide into it. A set of engine mounts and a new yoke on the driveshaft was about the extent of the fabrication. It's an easy swap, you'll need to make an engine mount cradle for the six's side mounts and new transmission mount. They hydro will not bolt to the chevy block, so you can't use the existing trans, but why would you anyway?

It can be done but you would need a lot of doner parts from a 50’s Chevrolet pickup with V8 that had a hydramatic. That trans takes a lot of hp so it’s not desirable. Good luck.
I would pull everything out and sell/give to a r•t r•dder and move on.

  5. You would need to swap the engine and trans
Not that big a deal as the 250 will take any modern trans 350,400 200 etc

This would be SO wrong... There are straight 8s around in good shape that have been pulled.
Just keep your eyes open. Of course, a Packard 8 would be cool :)
And I know of several Buick 8s.

I think a easier swap would be a 303 or 324 Olds if you could find a good one, many years ago I had a 47 Pontiac and a 53 Olds that was hit in the rear and both frames looked the same and came close to doing that swap. That 250 will not bolt to the original trans unless you could find the bellhousing and flywheel from a mid 50s Chevy truck that had a 4 speed hydramatic.

Yep, the Olds to Pontiac swap was the thing to do back in the fifties and early sixties. I'll bet I knew 4 or 5 guys that did it (the Hydramatic made it easy).

That will not work with a 250 and Jimmy Six knows better. You have to have a transmission with a V8 Chevy bellhousing such as a Turbo 350 or aluminum powerglide.

Trying to jerry rig just about any engine that didn't directly bolt up to that stock Pontiac trans is going to cost as much as a rebuld on the Straight 8. A usable turbo 350 shouldn't cost very much and the 250 and turbo 350 being stuck into that car aren't going to call for any cutting or modifications to the car like some swaps.

250/th350 is easy, cheap, and good. You don't often get all three. Duals and 4bbl will wake up the engine. An Olds engine will probably cost a pretty good price, ( I have a short block for sale), and would be cool, but how much time, money, and enthusiasm do you have? Chevytize it and be done. Spend the savings on interior and paint.

Didn't the straight 8's have front engine mounts and bell housing mounts?
I take it the front cross member is easy to adapt the 250 mounts to?

Yes they do. When I did my Chevy six swap (a free engine from a nice little Chevelle my wife's brother crashed), I used the cars original trans (bell housing) crossmember as an engine mount. I moved it forward in the frame under the engine, made some engine mounts on with steel from the scrap pile, using it as a saddle mount. It was WAY more fun to drive without the boat anchor straight 8. We drove it that way for years, went to the NATS South in '78 with it.
