I have a 350 turbo Hydro transmission with no converter but I do have a torque converter for a 400 Turbo Hydro on the Shelf well that work with 350?
They are the same, the bolt holes may be in a different location. But most flexplates have both patterns.
I was under the impression that a TH400 converter (stock stuff) is larger diameter and would have a lower stall, I think I remember guys using a th350 converter to get a few hundred RPMS more stall?
Years ago, I used one in the other, went okay. I think Powerglide torque converters were used for the higher stall. Or was it the small engine (6 cylinder) ones. Something like that. Been quite a while.
It was common decades ago to use a Vega convertor, I used to have a pattern to re-drill the flex plate. But much abuse and they would blow up and take the case with them. But there were no credit cards back then so we used whatever we had ! sure was fun.
Kinda like I recall reading about and what guys did back when you could got get one from a wrecking yard for cheap. Heck, a stall converter was about a hundreds bucks back then!
A 400 converter will work just fine . It holds about one more qt of fluid . I ran one in my 38 Chevy for years without a cooler . I just connected the out to the in on the ******. Never, never a problem. I wouldn't do this with a heavy trailer but the rod was light .
T350 and T400 use same torque converter mounting. PG is different. So your T400 converter will fit and work in your T350. Stall may be not ideal, but for a stock engine it should be close enough. Sent from my SM-G950U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The T400 will fit in a T350,but the bolt pattern is larger. T350 and PG is 10.75 in. T400 is 11.50 in. You need a dual pattern flex plate. Most T400 converters were 1300 to 1700 stall.
Non-VP 400 converters will fit non-VP ST 300s and TH350s. For years the HP 400 TC was a full sized 400 unit, you could tell it was high stall because the vanes were spot welded through the dimples. There were 3 diameters of TH350 converters, the early Vega was 11", later was 10" and they worked OK behind a reasonable V8 if you didn't do burnouts. The stators would pop pretty easy, but if you could do without burnouts they gave a big boost in stall speed for low bucks. Usually welded 3 small tabs and drill to fit TH350 flex plates.
As 38chevy454 said the T350 and T400 use the same spline PG was different unless it had been refitted with Turbo spline which used to be pretty common with guys using them for drags,it gave them a better selection for stall converters. The vega converter used to be pretty popular item where I grew up down south back in the late 70's nobody had money for the fancy aftermarket converters.Them Vega 4 cyl.'s usually died young and left a converter ripe for picking.
