After multiple searches I’m still scratching my head on these water pumps. Anticipating the experts here can help guide me.

I picked up this engine to replace my old 221. It’s a 59a, bored 60 over and has a 4” stroke crankshaft in it. I bought it from an estate sale (deceased owner) so I don’t know the background on it but the price was right. The water pumps on it right now don’t line up with the crank pulley though, the pumps stick out 1/4- 1/2 inch past the crank pulley when I look down. The pulleys on the pumps are different as well. The p***enger side one has some rough spots when it rotate it so I was going to have them rebuilt but not sure if they are even correct for the engine. They pulleys on my 221 look different.

Any ideas on why they are different? Why they don’t line up with the crank pulley? I want to run the crank fan from my 8a “crusty” so hoping that will swap over to the new engine. Thinking I should use the use the pumps off that engine and get them rebuilt. At least they would look the same then and should then line up with the crank. (Hopefully?)

    Any input appreciated.

It really depends on what frame your installing the engine into.
Some have different engine mount heights.
The crank pulley looks to be a wide belt type.

    Here are two variations.

48-52 truck pumps that will raise the engine height.

    38-48 car pulleys. Lower height.

    Good article.

I’m kinda curious as well. I have a C59 and my water pumps look slightly different (I don’t have the curved support web yours have). Mine was a truck engine and pumps are wide belt. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single groove crank pulley. Mine has three grooves but I’m not sure what they were all for as it was di***embled when I putchased it. One thing I myself have been wondering about is those one piece crank seals and the corresponding mating ring I’ve seen someone selling that slides onto the crank vs the sprial groove section on the factory crank pulleys. Could you have that arrangement installed whereby someone cut off the spiral section on the original crank pulley and installed one of those one piece seal rings?

    My pumps...

The OP has 39-48 p***enger pumps on both engines. Maybe the castings were made by different suppliers, or different molds, so that's why they look slightly different. But they should interchange perfectly. The one pulley is stamped steel while it looks like all the others are cast. Again, they should all interchange properly.

How about measuring them all from the pulley to their back mounting surface? If one doesn't match, don't use it.

Maybe the new crank pulley is off? The crusty one is a 40 Ford pulley, and the cleaner one is later. They should be the same offset, but who knows? How about switching the old pulley to the new engine. You would need it to mount the fan in your 40 pickup anyways.

If you need new pumps, look at Dennis Carpenter. My brother was buying pumps last week and found they had nice looking parts, and the shipping wasn't as high as a usual source I use.

Thanks for the replies, I pulled them both off and the impellers are different thicknesses. The thinner ones matches my old flathead pumps. The one that had the rough spot and odd pulley has some slop in the bushing. I’ve decided to buy two new pumps. Way easier to replace while the engine is out.
