Yes. I have customers running bias-look radials on them, with radial tubes. Since they were never designed to hold air as a wheel alone, the rivets can leak. Some have good luck with sealer, and others have welded up the rivet edges. You will be limited to a fairly narrow tire. Pinching a wide radial on a narrow wheel is not a good idea. With a bias ply tire you can get away with it, but only so much. I have a customer that actually has 8.90-16 Firestone dirt track tires on those. They deflect in corners. I will be building him a set of widened wheels (6-1/2" versus 4") soon.
My '39 p/u with wide 5's had 215/70R16's the the PO installed. If it was me I would have used a narrower aspect ratio like a 75 or maybe 215/85R16's but those are a truck tire and I really don't need that heavy of a load rating. They are running tubeless. I don't think the rivets were sealed but don't know for sure. The rears don't loose any air but the fronts loose 3-4 pounds every 2 weeks or so. Not sure if the rivets leak or if its do to the front tires flexing while turning? But it seems strange that only the front rivets would leak and not the back. When I get caught up with other projects I'll dismount the fronts and Flex seal the rivets to see if that solves the problem.
I like to put motorcycle rim strips on the early wheels to cover the rivets and protect the tubes as well.
