Looking to see what everyone is running for headers on a 34 ford pickup. I'm well aware of block huggers but curious if anyone is running full length or if your run into clearance issues with the trans. Looking to run exhaust underneath so I can keep the hood on. Thanks!

  2. There's been several threads discussing inexpensive offshore stainless headers for 'hot rods' (both shorties and long tube; I can't find the exact thread I was looking for) but to make a long story short, the long tube versions hang down pretty far, pretty much restricting them to stock-height cars or 'g***er' types. They end up hanging below the bottom of the frame to clear the K member. If you can live with that, they otherwise fit fairly well. IIRC, it was a set of these or very similar.... 1927-34 Small Block Ford Ch***is Headers, Stainless Steel (speedwaymotors.com)

As these are designed for a 302, a 351W will move them up/out about an inch, so fit may become an issue.

Just did a '34 Ford P/U with a 351 Cleveland, I don't see how you could do full headers but I suppose it's been done. You will have lots of issues like steering geometry, brake m/c, z bar if running a manual trans. Check your fan to radiator and engine to firewall clearances, it's a tight fit, I chose to move fire wall back like a '32 p/u firewall. We ended up with ****** or Headman headers, like block huggers but better quality........................

I’ve got a 302 with a C4 in a 34 RPU, just pulled off full length headers and put on Hedman shorties. Part# HED 88406 at Summit. The full length hung down way too low. The Hedmans clear everything. Well made, flat flanges, beautiful ceramic coating.

Haven’t run final pipe all the way back yet, probably have to go to one on the PS then split back to duals. No room to run drivers side through the frame.

I used to get Hedman Ford van headers to fit in the early Ford ch***is but the details escape me at the moment. I think they stopped making them anyway. Maybe Ford truck or the Mustang Tri-Ys that are all over the internet. doesn't Sanderson make something?
So many variables though, motor mounts, steering box, steering shaft, etc. Good luck.

Gnater, thats a nice setup! I will also be running a c4. Will be putting on a electric water pump and fans. Is there no clearance on the driver side because of the brake pedal setup? I'm using a 1 1/2 ton truck frame so I may have less clearance than you.

Can you run duals with block huggers?

Thanks for the compliment. Further detail, I have Heidts motor mounts in stock location and a high torque starter that I clocked to clear. I can PM more pics if you want.

Correct, the MC takes up the space. I’m thinking I’ll copy Henry’s design and cross under the oil pan, join the PS pipe, then split again for duals out the back.

Did you have to cut the firewall to fit it in there? I’m running a 351w and haven’t mocked up the motor yet, still waiting for the trans to come back. I’m also curious to what radiator you’re running? I’m using a 34BB truck and turning it into a pickup. Been gathering parts and now ready to start building. I have most the engine parts except headers. Building my own box. I have to back my frame. Only parts I need are a radiator, steering column, rear coil overs, and interior. I have a Pete and Jakes front end on it and front crossmember, but not sure if it’s the right spot or has the correct layback. I don’t really want to spend $1000 on a Walker. I’m looking for something that has electric fans on it as well

Here is a set that I built for a '32, mighty close, using a Mustang box. IMG_0859.JPG IMG_0861.JPG

In Gnater's pic (post #4) you are looking at a '34 p***enger firewall, apples & oranges!
If you are putting a 351 in a '34 p/u you will have to move firewall back or notch fire wall like Marty did above in a '32. Remember a bolt in '32 fire wall is already placed further back than a spot welded in '33 or '34. To get a 351 Cleveland into a '34 p/u I had to move firewall back to almost where a '32 is placed. We ran a Walker, maybe they saved you a thousand by closing their doors........................

The firewall in my pic is original but only the top half is there. I have a 3” recessed new one from *****n Sheetmetal to install for improved clearance. Not sure how the stocker would fit the headers as it’s gone....

I’m using a 34bb body and frame, originally a flathead v8 truck. Is there any fitment differences/body differences between them and a regular pickup?

Great question, don’t know. May want to ask in the general forum for a better response. My dad did all the body fitment, he used a roadster body he modified and a 29 pickup bed.
