Hot Rods Have you ever built a hot rod with fenders and then later take them off? or vice versa?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Dec 28, 2020.

  1. Personally, I have had early Fords with fenders and considered removing them but never did, likewise I have had a couple of hiboys and kept them that way with no desire to add them later. HRP

Danny, I have always loved fenderless cars, built several, but it's more than peeling the fenders off. The car has to look "right" to be a good looking fenderless car, and every car has a different look to achieve that "look." Some look good with bias skinnys, some look good with the whole "track" look and bigger rubber, depending on the style the car has been put together. I'm sure you'll agree.

Built my '29 with fenders then took them off..........found out this isn't the neck of the woods for fenderless. Got tired real quick with the crap all over our roads and sure didn't like water in the face. Put them back on!

Helped a neighbor build his '35 Plymouth as a fenderless frontend, but fendered rear. Then after a lot of work to fit the fenders, radius them, get everything smoothed up, I mentioned I thought it looked better fenderless. He still wanted fenders, so off to paint it went. When it came back I went over to see how the paint came out, and he said he decided to not use the fenders after all.

To my way of thinking anything after 34 looks like its missing something without fenders. It just doesn’t flow.

When I built my '36 Ford pick up, I had to get a Specially Constructed Vehicle title and was required to have fenders. I mounted trailer fenders on the rear and home made cycle fenders on the front. They sort of fell off shortly after I got my plates.

I'd say that may happen more with rods that go though several redo stages with the same owner over the years. Especially for real long time ownership. Built with fenders in the 70's because most states required fenders or at least required them if your car weighed over _____ lbs. Trends changed and the car was redone as a highboy at one time.
I originally wanted to build the 31 Vic I had as a highboy on 32 rails and was seriously considering having a set built in Texas and picking them up on a road trip to see my wife's mom and sisters. The "we are going to Texas for a visit but driving and taking the trailer and I have a side trip planned." thing.
Wife wanted fenders and now I have a really nice stainless headlight bar for a Model A that is Vee'd for a 32 Grill that I need to sell.

I built a 48 Schwinn without fenders and recently added a set. that's all I got.

50's and 60's cars don't look right without fenders..... so I left all my fenders on over the years.o_O

Makes it hard to attach your balloons to make that "vroom vroom" sound in the spokes though!

  21. I fully intended to use fenders on my '32 pickup from day one, but while I was building the truck I admit I did take a long hard look at it without fenders during assembly. HRP

I'm building my '32 as a Highboy but i did drill all the fender holes in the frame considering that I change my mind often.

  24. Good idea to plan ahead, if and when you decide to add the fenders the holes will be in the proper place and the paint won't get buggered up drilling holes. HRP

The plan from the get-go was full fenders when I built my old Sedan Deliv. Problem was, it just kept looking too damn cool without them...Sold the fenders:) 32c.jpg

  28. It's interesting just how many 32-34 Ford pickup's are running sans fenders and they look great! HRP
