Great films of the early races! Thanks for posting. This tin toy racer is as close as I ever came to the race. Mick
We have a soap box track in our town but our family never took advantage of it. When my son was in the scouts we participated in the pine wood derby for kids and parents. I kept my old# 57 entry all these years...my kid is 47 years old now. Hopefully my grandsons will be interested in the soap box race.
Always wanted to do this as a kid, but... growing up in NE Nebraska meant no hills for miles and no paved roads if there were any hills. So no way to attempt a test run
Raced with my daughter 2007 to 2011 .. Loved it ... fantastic way to get a kid interested in the ( Hobby ) raced Akron in 2010 as Michigan's Champion was also 2010 National derby Points Champion
I never got to do an official Soap Box race but we have a big hill just up the road from my house and as a kid I built many wooden go karts out of whatever was lying around. I would pull those things up the hill and coast down all day long. Always had to get the wheels back on the lawn mower before my father got home. Built many Pine Wood Derby cars when my boys were in Scouts. I like the power slide the kid did in the first film!!!!.....it didn’t look like the first time he’s done that.....Mark
Have the same exact car, but driver is missing the helmet Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I won the soap box derby in Jackson, Tn in 1968. Lost the first race due to driver error. I still have that car.
Soap Box Derby champion from Phx, AZ. in 1961, when I was 12 yrs. old. Came in 2nd in 1960, cried when I saw the trophy going to the 1st place winner and made a vow to myself that I'd win next year. Derby Town in Akron, OH was wonderful. Still have several filled s****books of memories. It was a first-cl*** event all the way.
