  3. I know in Texas, if your car is registered as antique, you are only issued one plate for the rear. I know see a guy that has a 49 Mercury woodie with Texas antique plate on rear and 49 California plate on front. I have two cars registered as antique. Only running rear plate.

I’m just going through this in Texas. Small Town... I know the license lady... she gave me 3 options on my 32 Nash... Get a 1932 Plate, license it as a Cl***ic, or a regular plate. According to her, it had to be the year of manufacture.

  6. Here in California the YOM program is just that, year of manufacture ONLY. The oldest plate you'll find with regular registration is 1963 as I BELIEVE that everyone (that was in the system) was issued new 1963 plates. California residents received a new plate every year until 1940 (?) and then tabs (stickers in '57) with new plates every few years. Anyhow, I have 2 vehicles with blue plates (1969-1981) and I like those better then the YOM ones.

    Hello,

In 1956, California issued new base license plates with a yellow background and black lettering. P***enger car plates have 3 letters and 3 numbers. Truck / commercial plates have 1 letter and 5 numbers. It was difficult to have a 1958 Impala with 1956 issued plates, but it was the only option at the time. There was only one teenager in our group with a 1956 Chevy two door post car that had matching Yellow 56 plates for his car.

Most of our high school cars from 1954 forward had yellow plates in So Cal. If one bought the car after 1956, then yellow 56 plates were issued, regardless of make or year of car. Then the sticker program came into play. So, those old license plates stayed around for quite some time.

If one was able to get a commercial plate, it allowed anyone to park in a yellow loading zone for “loading” or making a quick stop into a business for pickup or delivery. Sometimes, the 1965 El Camino was able to utilize the yellow space for longer errands, due to the commercial plates on it.

“The DMV sensed our plate-boredom, and has begun taking $50 pre-orders for it’s “legacy license plates,” including the yellow-with-black-lettering of the 1956 to 1962 issue years, the-black-with-yellow-lettering of 1963 to 1969, and the blue-with-yellow-lettering of 1969 to 1986. However, the DMV stated that it wouldn’t begin re-making any of the plates until it has received 7,500 pre-orders for each by Jan. 1, 2015. Orders for the black plates flooded in, and the DMV’s plate manufacturer is warming its presses. The yellow and blue plates are still in a holding pattern until their order numbers meet the mark.”

"So, head over to the DMV’s Legacy Plate Program page for information on how to mail in your order.

Personalized Legacy plates can have 2-7 characters (numbers/letters)."

All three of my cars have year correct plates on them. In Oregon if you want to license your car with year correct plates, it has to be licensed "special interest", and using 60's plates on a 30's car isn't allowed under special interest rules. It would be OK to use the plates, but then it would be regular licensing, with big renewal fees every two years. Since I paid $82 per vehicle for special interest registration that are year correct. I'd hardly want to go from my cheap one time fee to a couple hundred every two years.

And Oregon requires two plates for regular licensing. But for special interest only a rear plate is required.

I honestly don't care about YOM plates. Is it because I wasn't around in 1951? I dunno. But my normal plate doesn't bother me at all. I have the YOM plate that was on it when I bought it, and considered putting it on the front, but it's just hanging on the garage wall at the moment. I suppose like everything else hot rod it's subjective...

Sorta surprised that there is a state(s) that would allow a '54 plate on a Model A. It only makes sense to maybe 1% of people who notice it. Seems like you'd get tired of telling folks the story after a while.
