Hot Rods Your thoughts on buying rotted A roadster hot rod.

I came across this for sale. Old hot rod sat in a shed for years rotting. Comes with some loose ends. Patch panels, frame, 16” rims, gas tank, axles. No ownership. Asking $2400 (USD) but seems like $1800 is his number.
What’s your thoughts? Big project, but is it just junk and walk away, or worth trying to save??

 

You're going to need a donor car to save that car.
Pass on that one, and buy a donor car and build it.

I’m not typically negative but I don’t see $1800 there but can see many more $ if you buy it.

 

Is it neat? Yes. Is it worth saving? Also yes. Would I pay $1800 for it? Probably not.

The frame looks clean, but they're not real pricey, and I personally wouldn't use either one of those front axles. Not sure what that rear is, but it's nothing super valuable.

The patch panels for the quarters help, also helps it was a real roadster. Has the roadster cowl with windshield posts, neat Shoebox dash swap, a saveable trunklid and tulip panel, and some rough but fixable doors. Grille shell, hood and radiator are pretty sweaty looking, not worthless but certainly not nice. So there's some value there. But this is a huge project, even for someone willing to dive into the metalwork.

Generally, if you're buying a project in a pile, the pile should be cheaper than the sum of the individual parts, and I think it'd be really tough to part this out for $1800 without a title.

It's neat, but I think it'd have to be less than a grand for me to get excited about it, even if I really wanted one.

 

Buying a set of stanchions and a dash for $1800?

Keep in mind that the OP is in Canada so $2400 USD is a HUGE pile of cash when converted to Canadian Tire mon ---- errrrr, Canadian money


My opinion .... I'd haul my dog off to the vet for a shot if he pissed on that mess. I wouldn't even think of buying that thing at anywhere near what he is asking or hoping to get.

 

If you buy it, this time next year you will wish you hadn't.

I'm a border guy too, and I'd pick that up if it were close to me, but not for that price. Once you buy one, better pieces tend to turn up. Sometimes the start of a great project; sometimes.

 

You'd have more fun at the club with 1800 one dollar bills. Keep looking for a better one...

 

Saw that on kijiji , cool looking pile o parts but not worth the price of admission.

 

Sometimes we see things no one else does. Money is only a means of exchange. If there is something you think will take you to another level the money you spend is just a stepping stone to a plateau of where happiness exists momentarily. It is like getting a fix, and then moving forward through another battleground with conscience, self-esteem, peer group pressure and a whole pyramid of other factors pressing on you. Then, of course, there is the work to build something that takes actual material world values to consider. Being a Hot Rodder is a lot like being an outlaw. You need a tough as nails conscience and cannot use the same value system those who buy used cars, or new ones, in order to express to those you must deal with the logic of your choices. This puts all of us, in many respects, outside the parameters of acceptable social acceptance. Truly, to most people, those who worship at the altar of old iron are Hoodlums. So to ask if those pieces of rusted metal are worth the money, what are the other alternatives you have for your 'fix'? That is how to decide. And, I see you said the money would be spent on something you already have. Then why are you looking around at this junk, taking up our valuable time and folding like a man with a broken straight? Ha ha.

 

I believe I'd pass on it myself.

 

In case I’m not seeing something in this. Is it worth grabbing and tucking away for another day. Spread money over a new project or just keep dumping into the 3 I’m doing.

 

You will regret buying that scrap metal but the seller will be smiling.

I like to look at things in a positive way. I would positively run

 

Pretty tough pile of car , ownerships are getting tougher to get and that will be the second out !!! If you had to get out for one reason or another how long would you wait to get 1800.00 back for it ??

 

If you have a lot of free time and you are looking for a challenge,(cause it certainly is), buy it and blast the rust off and see what's left. Not much I wager. I would save my money and look around. JMO. Find a nice body and buy it. Go from there. Lippy

 

If you are genuinely asking the question you probably already know the answer. If you are very good with metal work you will know how many hundred hours there are ahead of you. If you need someone to do the metal work the $1800 is going to be such a small part of the bill it will be insignificant.

If you do want to buy, what do you think it is worth? Offer the seller that. One of the best ways is put your phone number and dollar value. If he gets back in a week with a yes then give him the money.

For me personally I would not pay one dollar, it may be worth a lot more to others but all I could do is try and part it out. When you factor in your own time of waiting for buyers not to turn up, muck you around and such. It can be a tough way to make a few hundred.

Thanks. I have other projects. It’s a super rough body. I just hate passing up roadsters. I have a couple roadster ownerships in hand as well. But seems like the consensus is a pass on this one

That body is going to be way more patch panel than original Henry when it is all done.
To me it's worth what the going price for a Model A frame in that shape with the chassis parts that are there is plus an honest price for the usable parts off the body. That being what you could actually use on a different body without a huge amount of repair.
