Does anyone have any experience with replacing rusted out portions of rear rails on a Ford Fairlane? I am looking at a car- 64' Fairlane 500 and this is something I am not familiar enough to know how big of a headache or $ it would take to fix. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

  3. Well, any time you're doing under-body repair it's a bit of a PITA but if that's the worst you have to deal with it's not that bad. I personally wouldn't even worry about store-bought patch bits for that, I'd just cut back until you get to reasonably sound metal and then fill the holes back.

  4. Its been my experience with rust that what you see is about 50% of what is really lurking underneath. I would take a punch and try to poke holes in a lot of places to see how extensive it really is.

Pretty common issue with unibody cars. Good to verify the rest of the frame rail like 56don mentioned.
Not a terrible problem to fix and good way to get some experience while using a little heavier gauge of metal instead of thinner sheet metal. Easier to weld and what not.
